Depending on the what the language of the policy says, your bike may (or may not) already be covered.
Renters insurance is cheap. Much cheaper than a $3000 bike (or a $6,000 bike i.e. prior masters racers posts).
The short answer is call your agent, and when they propose to sell you a policy take the time to read the policy.

I am interested in insuring a bike or two that I will be commuting on. It probably has to be a separate policy for me to be interested. I don't have a homeowner's policy and my belongings are covered for theft here where I am living (with family for now). The bike will be have to left outside and so I am looking at ways to commute by bike and take some of the risk out of it. It is not a high theft area, but still...
