We Are All Traffic

We can all try to make a difference in perception by doing the right thing ourselves...either on a bike or in a car. It all comes down to individual choices. But it is very important to work together as a group (cyclists) in a positive manner because as much power as we may have... we are small compared to the huge number of auto drivers. Our voice and actions need to be focused on fairness and respect for all.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] We Are All Traffic

I’m an avid cyclist & bike commuter (for 8+ years) but on occasion (1-2 days a week) I have to drive my car for business and I want to share my recent experience while driving through downtown & east Portland. On Wednesday evening while driving east through downtown I witnessed 5 cyclist go through red lights and stop signs, I also observed 3 other cyclists weaving through traffic and cut in front of cars without signaling, during this same time I saw one cyclist obey the traffic laws (waiting for his turn and stopping for lights & signs). On Thursday morning, while driving west toward downtown (from east Portland) I watched as 4 cyclists went through red lights & stop signs and two more were riding side by side in the middle of the lane when there was an empty bike lane to their right. I am a huge fan of the We Are All Traffic initiative & rally (I will be there rain or shine) but I must say we as the cycling community need to start acting like we know and obey the traffic laws !
