Mud Analysis

Slop and glop are far worse than soup. I'd give soup a 4.

Time to start grading yer mud! I'd say it looked like a lot of grade 8 by
the end of it all!

In general, that sticky "peanut butter" mud gets a little better for riding when it starts raining more. It's like lubrication or dilution. At the same time, that extra moisture creates new obstacles, such as depth. The line is always changing in epic conditions, and there are about 10x more things to factor into what helps you race better or worse than usual. The biggest thing that helps is having done it many times. First hand experience teaches you stuff that is virtually impossible to convey in any other way. It also helps if you have northern european heritage.

I don't know how many laps the A's did, because I lost track of it all while in survival mode. I definitely was unable to speak. I took 4 superman dive crashes into the slop and, since it didn't hurt, it was quite fun! I apologize to the crowd who was yelling for "more". I just didn't have the desire to provide any more crashing entertainment. Maybe next time!

I feel for the officials who are trying to untangle it all.

It was definitely >/= to 7 by the end of the day... Isn't it great when riding through #10 mud actually makes your bike work better?

It was much harder to identify riders in the last 3 races. The riders were
completely covered with mud.
I am not sure we can put together the SrMst A race at all.

What are some opinions on the evolution of the course over the race
yesterday? I preroad the course about 8:00 and thought the mud was tacky and
thick. By my race time 11:00 I thought is soupier and more ridable.
From the pictures of the later races it appears watery and even more
ridable. I do know the tempature remained about 43 degrees all day and the
rain fall appeared static.

I was lucky enough to race later in the day! In the B/SS race the mud was watery except right before the finish line in that last stretch of mud before the asphalt. I tried to ride it everytime but just ended up endoing and falling face first in the mud! I think the first racers got the worst of the mud! Great race! My favorite of the season!

I dunno about more ridable. By the 2:00 race, the ruts were pretty treacherous. Also, some areas got very boggy. For instance, the area near the power pole heading onto the pavement (near the start/finish) was fast enough for the B/SS guys to endo in the right hand hole. I was never able to go fast enough to risk and endo in that section.

The course certainly changed over the day and I'm not going to speculate about who had it the most difficult. I will say that the conditions were epic and the course was outstanding. It was a great day of racing. Anyone who came out will be talking about this one for a while.

Now if we could just get some warming tents for days like those ...
