Junior racers and character

Yeah! That is the way it was. I (with lots of cowbell and loud voice of encouragement)went from the far West end of the course to the far East (at Endo Station) and the two of them were working their way through together at both places. That was a great show of support in tough conditions. There were some other juniors that were working really hard as well. That was a HUGE CLALLENGE to those kids. They are learing so much about getting through tough challenges. Finishing that race will help them as they mature. Heck! It will help all of us mature.

To an unknown junior racer at Hillsboro yesterday-
I'm not sure who you were due to the mud, but I think you race for BBC (green and yellow beneath the mud). (Someone please jump in here if you can ID).

There were two of you riding together the whole race, one probably a young teenager, the other barely big enough for his cross bike. Even though you were stronger and faster, you waited at every corner for your young teammate, carrying your bike through every mud pit to stay with him, standing on every hill yelling encouragement and smiling. You stuck together through the toughest race many of the adults have ever ridden, and you finished together. It was one the greatest examples of selflessness I have ever seen, and your coach, your team and your parents should be immensely proud. You exemplify what it means to live and race with character, and we are all better off for having you race in our midst.

The two kids were a BBC's new 16 year old sensation Jacob Gandel and my
little 9 year old boy Rubin Field. Jacob fell on a rock early in his
first lap and smashed his hip bone. Rubin stopped and encouraged Jacob
to get back on his bike and to ride through the pain. In turn, Jacob
guided his 4'3" teammate Rubin through the course in Rubin's second mass
start race as a junior. From my observations as a racer and dad,
Beaverton Bike Club's coach Phil Saunders does a tremendous job in
developing his juniors and in training and instilling a sense of
teamwork and respect in all of his racers. Sportsmanship is a great
thing. Kudos to Phil!
