The New Year?s resolution at the Burnaby Velodrome will be to ?GO FAST?, as some of the top professional track riders in North America will ring in the New Year at the Burnaby Velodrome Six Day bicycle race.
For the uninitiated, up to twelve professional teams will contest racing every night for six nights starting December 31 and winding up on January 5. In the true tradition of European 6 day bicycle races, riders will compete over the course of six nights in mainly Madison events for a prize purse of $5000.
The evening?s events will see local heroes, the Symmetrics Professional Cycling Team, field as many as two teams including UCI America's Tour winner Svein Tuft, Vuelta di Chihuahua runner up Christian Meier, and World Cup track competitor Zach Bell against very strong competition from south of the border in the guise of the Cody racing team of Kenny Williams and Kirk O'Bee, and the ProMan professional track team featuring Roman Kilun and 2006/2007 US National champion Dave McCook. The Calyon-Litespeed pro team from Quebec will feature the Vives brothers Max and Charlie, medallists at the 2007 Canadian Championships. There will also be a team from Major League Cycling, a US outfit that has European 6 day racing experience. Other riders of note will include Cody O'Reilly from the Kodak Gallery team and local junior phenom Cody Campbell with his 4 medals from the Canadian Junior Nationals this past year.
Madison's will run every night with race distances covering up to 200 laps for single events on some nights at the 200m track. Check out the race website www.burnabysixday.com and come out and enjoy some of the best racers in North America as they prepare for the 2008 Olympics.
