Re: A Cycling Phenomenon

One of the great things about the Bike Culture here in Oregon is there are already sooooo many teams, clubs & organized rides that you could probably ride with one of them every day of the week, some of the rides are hard core hammer fests (every week) while others are more relaxed (with stops for coffee & cake, not a bad thing). Yet other rides are gender and/or gearing specific... there is something for everyone (hills, flats, fast, slow, track, mountain, road, cross, geared bike, fixed gear only...) I think the Oregon Cycling experience is THE Phenomenon and of course if you want to start something new, you can do that too :)

Hey Gang,

Keep in mind that this isn’t a non-sanctioned race, but a very controlled, tame group ride that obeys and follows the rules of the roads that has been done for so long that it is actually loved by the local non-cycling community.

It is very well thought out, organized and even supervised to some degree. It’s mostly a big long winter ride with some very safe, out of the way, “hot spot” sprints throughout the ride.

In all honesty, it’s one of the most well organized things I have ever seen and because of the respect that’s inherent with this ride, its legacy and its organizers, I’ve never seen people so well behaved on a “group ride”.

Remember, this wasn’t a call to arms for non-sanctioned rides. It was merely a story on a really neat cycling phenomenon that I thought the readers of this list would enjoy. (Thanks to those who contacted me privately.)

I love and have been absolutely amazed by what I have experienced in the cycling scene here in Oregon . I think it’s one of a kind and something that a lot of folks around the country could stand to learn a lot from.

However, there is life outside of it, and I just wanted to share a part of that world that has a special place in my heart, provide some interesting reading and provoke some thought in the process.

It appears that I have accomplished those goals. See you on the road.
