Goodbye Alpenrose :(

Good Luck!
Your heading to my old home town. You'll need to check out the Five Points or Vista Central area. Definitely some good places to eat. As far as riding is concerned, heard they opened up the old Columbia speedway for racing bikes. And yes they are racing track bikes out there. There are some very good bike shops down there, the one I would recommend would be OutSpokin.
Go GameCocks!

Hey Kevin,
Good Luck with the enlistment! I did my basic Training at Ft. Jackson in
Nov/Dec '86 and went out to Ft.Gordon in Augusta GA in Jan. '87. Through my
training spent about 2.5 years in Panama and finished out at Ft.
Bragg.....Columbia is nice area, to bad you are in basic, the Uni. of SC is
right there in town!

I don't know you, but sounds like a lot of folks do and I along with them
wish you the best. Stay Safe, Listen to your Cadre, pay attention, give it
100%, and never regret your decisions. Lastly, Thanks for serving! It
takes a lot considering the world as it is right now.

As of 4:00PM yesterday, I am now offically in the Army. I am shipping out on
the 22ed to Fort Jackson, SC for 9 weeks. From there I go to Fort Eustis on
the coast of Virgina for 27 weeks. I am becomming a crew cheif (lead
mechanic) on OH-58D Kiowa helicopters. From there I will learn how to fly
them. For all those who have seen Black Hawk Down, I will end up flying the
really small black helicopters for the Delta force.

This isnt to say that I'll stop racing. In fact, I fully plan on trying to
re-kick start the Army cycling program. Thanks to all you out at Alpenrose,
I am hopelessly addicted to the velodrome.

But anyways, the real point of this Email is to thank all those at
Alpenrose. You all are BY FAR the greatist group of folks I have ever been

fixed gear bikes, or the culture that is Oregon cycling. But Steve and
everyone else at the devlopment class changed a lot of that. And by the end
of a few of those classes, I was ready to roll.

That's when everyone else stepped in. Jen, Mike and Candi, and ultimatly
Abers, Tracy, McLaughry, VanValkenburg, and all the rest of the fast pants

of me :) It was honestly something that I had never experenced in any other
sport. You all would rip me a new one on the track, and then turn right
around and tell me what I did wrong, and how to fix it for the next race.

So without making this pathetically long winded, I just want to thank all of
you again. You are some fantastic people. I'll miss you all.
