OBRA Fund raising

I would like to agree with Ron, a calendar would serve to showcase
OBRA and raise money at the same time. The "neeked" calendar idea is
amusing for about 5 minutes, but usually you don't want it hanging on
your wall for a year, plus as has been stated already - the photos for
this exist already. I would avoid any "picture votes", the people
putting it together should decide and just get it done. I know I would
buy at least three. -Jake

Agreed, a $5-$10 fee would be very reasonable and I would consider it appropriate to raise it a bit more for the seniors/masters if we wanted to support the junior levels by maintaining or reducing their fees.

The calendar is a great idea but the membership fees are a reasonably stable way to run the finance end of this business.

Sheesh....

Just raise the cost of membership evenly across the board. We ALL use the signage at one point or another. There is no reason to go 'cheeky' to do this. The cost of production will increase the amount of what we already need.

This isnt rocket science for crying out loud.

Has anyone thought to contact Tim Bergmann. He's an ace graphic
artist, and the owner of a firm that does these kinds of things (as
well as a fine bike racer). He could at least tell us if such a
project is do-able within the time window available to get to market.

Raising membership fee is not a bad idea, but a calendar (especially like
Shane mentioned with 12 sponsors to help absorb the production cost) would
have the potential to get visual images of the excitement that OBRA provides
into peoples homes, offices and other public places. A calendar might be a
very good thing for OBRA. The "in the buff" one is a fun idea, but shots of
racing could be really kool.... and I forgot to mention pics of races on the
velodrome as well. It would be hard to pick just 12. If this is done and
folks in charge do ask for input on which images go on the calendar, I hope
they have a very good way to vote on it (and just get it done) so it does
not become a hanging chad method of choosing.

They may sell pretty well in bike shops as well.... but timing is everything
and most folks are either getting 08 calendars about "NOW", very soon or
already have them. I would buy several! Even if one is done now in a quick
manner, planning for the 09 calendar would be made easier because of work
done now. Great idea.... It would be neat to have Road, Mtb, Time trial
pics from Jan-Summer and some cross pics in the fall-Dec.

Fish...if you want to push this idea forward, I'd be willing to help
out.

I don't think the initial filtering process would be that hard. Let
each photographer that wants to contribute pick out a handful of their
favorite shots (the ones they are most proud of and want to showcase)
and submit them for consideration. That will narrow the pool down
considerably.

If you run with the concept of showcasing OBRA's diverse racing and
participants, you could ask the photographers to submit photos for each
category (juniors, beginners, cross, track etc....). A TTT photo would
be really cool. Would the photographer need to get the rider's
permission to use the shot (particularly for juniors)?

From there, someone (or a group) would need to decide on what shots make
the final cut.

Maybe one of the many OBRA bloggers could show the finalists on a blog
with a poll. Let OBRA at large vote for the best shot in each category.

The categories could be something like this:

1. Road
2. Track
3. Mtb
4. Cross
5. TT
6. TTT
7. Juniors (any discipline)
8. Women (any discipline)
9. Master (any discipline)
10. Beginner (any discipline)
11. Pro/celeb (any discipline)
12. Pro/celeb (maybe an OBRA national champion in a podium shot).
13. Best Overall (cover shot)

Here are some considerations in pushing this forward:

1. Is there enough time to get the calendars put together for this year,
seeing as January is coming fast? This could become a yearly thing, and
would make for a great gift idea.

2. Are there any graphic designers out there in OBRA that have the tools
and the know how to make it look professional and are willing to
contribute?

3. Anybody have an idea on printing/binding costs and where to get them
done. Kinko's, or are there better options?

4. Also, logistics on who fronts the money for the printing costs (i.e.
OBRA, or does an individual have to float it)?

Todd,

Great points.

This would prove much easier to do (since the shots already exist).
We'd need a way to filter the thousands of pics and find the ones that
would be selected.

Ted, Shane and the rest of you photographers out there, would this be
something you'd be willing to help with?

Other ideas?

Hey Fish,

I really like the idea of an OBRA calendar. That sounds like a really
good concept....BUT (...not BUTT) the flip side is that I'd imagine a
number of team sponsors wouldn't be so thrilled to see their name
associated with a clothing optional calendar (particularly if these are
team photo shoots with sponsors named).

It's definitely something each team would need to contact their sponsor
about, and even then calling up a sponsor to ask permission might raise
some concerns with certain sponsors. With 70+ teams, I suppose there
might be 12 sponsors that would be cool with it. You never know.

However, running with that concept a bit further, why not an OBRA
calendar that shows race shots? There are a ton of great photographers
shooting incredible shots at many OBRA events.

If there are 12 photographers willing to donate a good photo (or several
for consideration) to the cause I think we could end up with a great
calendar and there wouldn't even need to be a photo shoot. The material
is already out there. In exchange for the photo, the photographer would
get a full photo credit and put a website address and maybe a small logo
under the shot.

This would be great advertising for the photographers, and the concept
is already working with photos donated for the OBRA website.

The calendar could feature shots from each racing discipline, and
feature junior and women racers, maybe a couple shots of beginner
racers. In addition to fund raising it could be an avenue for promoting
growth in the sport. Of course, it would be cool to have some good hard
core race shots featuring some notable OBRA racers too.

I'd definitely put down some money to buy a calendar I could hang on my
wall at work.

When Candi asked for donations to help pay for road signs, I immediately
thought of a recent fund raising effort I and a few other cyclists
participated in locally for a youth shelter. If you've ever seen the
movie "Calendar Girls", you already are familiar with the concept of a
calendar capturing staged shots of regular folks in their birthday
suits, but done so in a tasteful way so as not to really show anything
better left to the imagination. I have had no luck conctacting the
photographer who did the last three Men of the Willamette Valley
Calendars. If you've see one of these, you get the idea.

I've asked our own Ted Turner to be our man behind the lens. He's
already storyboarding, looking into production costs, etc. If any of
you have seen Ted's photos of bike events, he does very fine work when
he's not officiating. Shane Young may also be helping out with the
photos, and you have likely seen his work from many of his pics last
season covering bike races of all types all year long all over the
state.

Reproducing this concept with our cycling crew, I envisioned a calendar
with one of our 70+ teams as the primary pic for each month. We could
do insets around certain big events and could even put the race dates on
the calendar if would could get concrete dates in time for the printing.

The shots will be staged, but it will likely happen either at races, or
at nearby venues on the same day as some of the big races. Hopefully,
we won't "need bigger buns" to keep the shots "clean".

I need a show of hands from teams who would be willing to provide 5-10
subjects for these shoots. Gentle Lovers and S&M, I know you guys are
already in, so no need to respond. ;-)

I'm hoping for a mix of male and female squads, so ladies, don't be shy!

Please let me know if you're interested in buying one, or interested in
being on one, or both! Cost will likely be $25 and I'm hoping all OBRA
members will buy one to help support the organization.

Details to follow as Ted and I solidify the plan. Nothing will likely
happen until after Cherry Pie and no shoots will be staged until we have
a little warmer weather. ;-)

Sheesh....

Just raise the cost of membership evenly across the board. We ALL use the signage at one point or another. There is no reason to go 'cheeky' to do this. The cost of production will increase the amount of what we already need.

This isnt rocket science for crying out loud.

I have wanted to do this for several years. It is all about time, MONEY and the know how.

1000 calendars are about the best price point at $3000 over the Internet or $5000 by a local printer. If we could get 12 (one for each month) sponsors at $300 or $500 a piece we should be able to cover all cost. If we sold the Calendars for $15 dollars that would be $15000 to OBRA.

So what we need is someone that knows Adobe InDesign to make the calendar. Some one to get the advertising money. Someone to collect photos. Once the photos have been collected I can put them up on my website for the public to decide what photos should belong to vote.

I am in class right now but I do have some other ideas that I can get out later.

Shane

He's already storyboarding, looking into production costs, etc. If any of you have seen Ted's photos of bike events, he does very fine work when he's not officiating. Shane Young may also be helping out with the photos, and you have likely seen his work from many of his pics last season covering bike races of all types all year long all over the state.

Reproducing this concept with our cycling crew, I envisioned a calendar with one of our 70+ teams as the primary pic for each month. We could do insets around certain big events and could even put the race dates on the calendar if would could get concrete dates in time for the printing.

The shots will be staged, but it will likely happen either at races, or at nearby venues on the same day as some of the big races. Hopefully, we won't "need bigger buns" to keep the shots "clean".

I need a show of hands from teams who would be willing to provide 5-10 subjects for these shoots. Gentle Lovers and S&M, I know you guys are already in, so no need to respond. ;-)

I'm hoping for a mix of male and female squads, so ladies, don't be shy!

Please let me know if you're interested in buying one, or interested in being on one, or both! Cost will likely be $25 and I'm hoping all OBRA members will buy one to help support the organization.

Details to follow as Ted and I solidify the plan. Nothing will likely happen until after Cherry Pie and no shoots will be staged until we have a little warmer weather. ;-)
