FW: Corbett/Springdale Community

Ted gresh

2001-09-06

I too must say I have not had any real bad encounters at the Corbet store. Maybe I was just oblivious to the sneers and mutterings.

A friend of mine lives in Corbet and I have asked her about the bike intolerance there and she recognizes it as being very bad. She did say it is mostly a vocal minority of Corbet folks that bear the grudge against cyclists. She and I ran the Moonlight Road race this past July. For that, they close the historic highway from about 8:30pm to 11:00 and run a 15k race from the Women's Forum to Multnomah Falls. Her take on that is that the community sees that race as a great event for the community. Go figure.

An approach may be to find the cycling advocates in the community and build on those relationships rather than the ones who are against cyclist...try and work from the inside...there has gotta be some people there who ride.

Just a thought.

Beth,

I agree, I've always had a friendly reception at both the country store and

the fruit stand. Perhaps we should all drop in on our "spontaneous" ride

out there on the 22nd and let them know that the neighborhood association is

driving away customers.

I think my unplanned trip should take me by the school about 9am. It would

be nice to just randomly run into some other spandex-clad car blockers for a

nice leisurely ride up the mountain. We can do finger exercises to break up

the boredom. In case it's chilly, I'll bring a thermos of hot cocoa for

after the descent.

Cheers,

Peter

I have stopped at the country store in Corbett and they are friendly.

Do

they like to steer you in the direction of their fresh water (it exists

for

free at "Women's Forum"), I doubt it. The local tavern in Springdale

used to

have a sign posted on the sidewalk to their door that read "THIS IS NOT

A

BIKE PATH". I always wanted to stop in on my way down from Crown Pt.

and

have a beer in my cleats to understand why that sign was there.

Plus....Ivan and I on our tandem stopped at the Strawberry/Raspberry

stand

in Corbett and we had the freshest raspberry homemade shortcake with

whipped

cream. They were very sweet to us. Cyclists can make a difference by

partronizing this small community with a smile. Oh and when we arrived

at

this fruit stand to have our fresh dessert there was already a biker

there

before us. Spread the kindness and try to make a good difference. Beth

I agree as to that being a potential help, but PR can be unpleasant...

In my experience, that store on the east end of Corbett just isn't very

friendly to cyclists. I think they're tired of us needing water (free),

even when we buy something ($). I would venture to guess that reception

there would be a world different if you pulled up in a 4-wheel drive

unit with three gas tanks, even if you weren't going to "fill 'er up."

This is too bad, as there must be hordes of cyclists that pass there

each day during good weather, a potential source of business.

I don't like to be negative, so if anyone can counter what I've said

about this store, post it! (Maybe they like your Colnago better than my

Giant?)

((What other businesses are in the area that we could court?))
