Smaller prizes= smaller entry fee= more racers= bigger races.

Swag is fine. $10 Gift certificate from the sponsoring bike shop; good.

Cash seems a bit silly. Are we pros?

Why do we race? For the money?

This sport is loosing game financially. I can't see how winning $25
or $50 is going to offset any real cost. Racing for cash might make
the race less friendly.

Do we need motivation to race, to win? If there was a $5 penalty for
winning, there would still be a sprint at the finish. If one is
racing for the money, one is in the wrong race.

This is my math:

Ride for fun (and exercise)
Train for fun
Race for fun
Win for fun
Lose, and still have a great time.

Prizes are immaterial. (I won't be getting any soon.) The results on
the OBRA website are bragging rights enough.

Have fun,

Fergus

I have never raced for prizes/money but that doesn't mean they were not appreciated when won. I do agree that swag often ends up not being used (though hopefully recycled in some way) so since we have so many great photographers out at most races how about certificates for photos?

Most of us have very few (if any) decent shots of ourselves racing and with so many people with their own blogs, etc I think it would be a nice treat to be able to add a nice photo of yourself to your "what I did this weekend" blog or to your team's website gallery. I personally think this is better than medals which end up in a box somewhere - I have only ever kept a very few, very special medals and even those are in some box somewhere (location unknown :).

In my humble opinion, cash is a good motivator for that tank of gas back over the mountains, lunch or whatever. It certainly helps!!

They have those already- they're called "RECREATIONAL RIDES"!

Cash is good, even if it's not much- I always feel like "hey, I can
buy lunch now- bonus!" Also, schwag is hard to split amongst
teammates that may have helped you snag that prestigous win at the POC
road race. ;-)

I'm gonna give my two cents, even though I'm totally new to the racing
thing.

No food/booze/coffee, except really good cake to go with the race theme.
(More and more people have dietary differences. It would really suck to get
something that you can't/won't eat/drink.) No t-shirts/bandannas. They
just end up unused.
Go deep with the prizes, massages and entry fee gift certs. would rock!
Cash is always good.

I always enjoyed the "beer number" at the CrossCrusade events (especially since I wasn't in contention of the "prizes").

Since it's a road race, how about a "coffee number" and hand out a bag of coffee beans. Might be tough to pull off logistically if it's not a series.

I like ribbons and food and alcohol as prizes. Keeps down the clutter and pleases the palate!

Last year I was second in the CAT 3 cherry pie and got one of the biggest disappointments of my racing career when my Cherry Pie came in a Hostess wrapper. I was bitter for the rest of the season. J Any promoter who has the foresight and good grace to offer me a coconut cake after a race is definitely going to get a Christmas card and perhaps even some inappropriate touching.

If you don?t want your beer or sugar fix? offer it as schwag to the finish line crowd and I guarantee you will have to wade home through the good Karma.

How about a category system where some race for prizes, some solely for
the challenge? Maybe even in the same race group, but the entry fee
would be lower when you check the box, "I'm just out for fun today?"

What about massage certificates, in 10-minute increments? 1st place gets a
full hour, then on down to 10th place or whatever. Even better if they're
redeemable right after the race. = ) I figure the massage school might go
for an arrangement like that. I know I'd sure bust it if I knew the legs
were getting a good rubdown post-race.

Last year I was second in the CAT 3 cherry pie and got one of the
biggest disappointments of my racing career when my Cherry Pie came in a

My vote's for keeping the swag to a minimum. That kind of stuff will just fill our landfills without much use. Cash at least lets you buy stuff you want/need... replacement parts, food, etc.

Prestovelo will be putting on the Piece of Cake Road Race again this year and we are in the process of putting together the details. Here's a question for everyone regarding prizes and prize distribution.

How would everyone feel if the prize list was reduced and instead we provided a higher level of swag for everyone? Maybe free t-shirts for all participants plus some other, unspecified swag? Or how about if we put some of the prize money fund back into OBRA as a fundraiser?

Do people really come to races for the prizes? Do the Cat 1/2's really race for the money?

This is all quite hypothetical at this point and we have nothing specific in mind, but people's responses might very well effect how we distribute stuff.

Post away.

Not everyone who races is of age to consume alcoholic beverages, and
further, some of us who *are* of age choose not to drink alcohol for
whatever reason.

Let the prize(s) be something everyone can enjoy - cake, a free meal at a
restaurant, free entry to another race, gift certificate to a bike shop,
etc.

Regardless of what the prizes end up being, some people will be happy, while
others might not.

I'd say the best prize is one that can be consumed/used up in one way or
another - none of us need more junk laying around!

I haven't heard any complaints from anyone who won beer or wine at cross
crusade races.
Also, free entry coupons to other events always seem cool to me. If you
can't go you can pass it on to another rider.

You're right, Duncan. I actually use the bandannas to blow my nose on. And a real cake (coconut please) would be awesome. I loved the cherry pie a couple years ago.

Do people really come to races for the prizes? Do the Cat 1/2's really race for the money?

This is all quite hypothetical at this point and we have nothing specific in mind, but people's responses might very well effect how we distribute stuff.

I think the best question is whether anyone actually wears or uses swag. I
can't think of any situation where I would wear a cotton bandana, let alone
some sort of ridiculous keychain or medal. Perhaps they should actually give
out cake... I think it would super cool to win a cake after a race.

I have been on both sides of this issue has a racers (I know its been a couple years) and as a promoter for over 10 years on the Mt Bike side.

As Melissa said some people could care less about shirts, while others love shirts.
Personally I loved the shirts because I raced in a class that was not paid cash ever.

IF you do shirtsI would have them every year from here on out...I was lucky enough to get local room tax money or last year a sponsor to pay for shirts,I had shirts most years, the years I didn't have shirts people were upset because they became use to getting shirts. From a promoters side shirts are a nightmare...you never know how many, what sizes to get because so few people pre-reg...some years I would run out before everyone got one and other years I still have over 100 shirts from that year.

Good luck

Some categories, like Masters Women, really don't have money anyway. So, why do we race? Must be for the fun, the challenge, and the glory. It's certainly not for money or swag, though those are always nice.

If you can use your extra funds to add to the fun or the glory, that would be great. Cyclocross is a good example of "fun" racing: music, crowds, cheering, cowbells, Halloween costumes! (Can you figure out how to add fun to a road race? Just curious...) Seeing your name on a winner's list, trophies/medals/ribbons/certificates, podiums, OBRA points, race photos, media coverage, and race-specific mementos are good for glory and recognition.

If you give out swag, it should be a specific souvenir of the race that people will value. Otherwise, it seems that we just spent some of our entry fee on buying stuff that we probably don't need (more water bottles, energy bars, and blinky lights??) Lots of people really don't need or don't wear printed cotton T-shirts, so it's a nice gesture but rather wasteful. I personally don't want T-shirts.

I would favor keeping the prize list fairly deep (the recognition factor), but keeping the monetary value low. I personally would value a 10th-place medal or ribbon far more than a handful of swag or a T-shirt.

So with that in mind cash is good because it can be used on anything.
Some sort of gift certificate would also be a nice option. A free or
discounted entry to another race might be nice (if it was transferable
in case I couldn't make it). A T-shirt is cool too, I'll just add it to
the other hundreds I have from other events...

And to answer the question directly - no, I don't race for the prizes.

Prestovelo will be putting on the Piece of Cake Road Race again this year and we are in the process of putting together the details. Here's a question for everyone regarding prizes and prize distribution.
