The fact is, a number of people who live up there have disliked recreational
cyclists on that road for years. They have attempted to get the authorities
to forbid cyclists on the roads and ludicrously have asked that we be
required to ride on 84 instead. At one point the authorities actually
considered a plan to have cyclist ride up the highway and ride back on 84.
Apparently, they forget that they live on the "SCENIC HIGHWAY" and that this
type of use is ideal for those types of roads. On rides up there I have met
both nice and nasty people, and you cannot generalize. Unfortunately, as in
most things, a group of committed, vocal jerks can have an impact far beyond
their numbers, as the current case demonstrates. The only solution is to
mobilize the rest of the people who may be sympathetic to us, but are not
vocal. As a result, the people who counsel cooperation with the community
are probably closer to accomplishing the desired result.

I am seeing a curious thing arise in these discussions. The average
non-cycling person does not know the difference between a tourist and a
"racer." Tourists are by far the majority out there. When people display a
general dislike for cyclists, they are most likely refering to the majority
of what they see, which are tourists, and not your local hot-shot racer. You
won't find anyone not saying hello or thanks on any of my rides, or on any
of those that I have been on in some time. I think that we might be the
victims of a problem that is not within our own immediate range. Any ideas
as to how to deal with this must consider both types of cyclists. And, yes,
in my experience, the more mirrors you have hanging off your bike, the more
unaware and obstructive you tend to be. Caveat emptor.
