Elkhorn Classic Updates...

Elkhorn Classic

2008-01-24

The 7th annual Elkhorn Classic Stage Race in beautiful Baker City,
Oregon, is already shaping up to be another superb event full of
challenging racing, fellowship with friends, and a bounty of wonderful
memories. We have received many inquires in response to category
announcements by other races and we would like to take a moment to
provide some information about our 2008 event.

Elkhorn is committed to continuing the same category opportunities as
last year:

? Men's Pro 1 / 2
? Men's Cat 3
? Men's Cat 4 / 5
? Masters men 40+
? Women's Pro 1 / 2
? Women's Cat 3 / 4 (women's categories scored separately but
run as one group)

All field sizes are limited to the first 100 riders (with the exception
of the Men's Cat 4/5, which is limited to 75 riders due to OBRA rules).

For the younger racers in the family, note that we will again be running
the Youth Series Kiddie Kilo (for children under the age of 14) to kick
off the Stage 3 Gold Rush criterium races in downtown Baker City.

A SPECIAL NOTE TO WOMEN RACERS:

This is your chance to make a statement about the quality and commitment
of women's racing in Oregon and throughout the Northwest. With the
support of business leaders in Baker City, we have committed to matching
the Women's Pro/1/2 payout to the Men's Pro/1/2 field, as well as
scoring the Women 3/4's separately so there are many opportunities for
women racers.

Many of you will recall that with less than a month before the start of
last year's race, we were concerned that we would have to cancel the
women's field due to low registration. Thanks to a late rally by
several individuals and teams, registration swelled and we were able to
run both women's fields. Even with that close call, you may also
remember that thanks to the generosity of Baker City residents and
businesses, the women's cash and prize payouts for the Gold Rush
Criterium matched the men's field; in fact, we had so many items that we
were unable to give them all away during the Crit stage. You have asked
for an opportunity in a stage race, and we have provided an exceptional
one: now stand up and be counted. Please pass the word to all women's
teams and racers, and please contact us directly if you have any
questions or concerns.

All Elkhorn racers should plan accordingly for a wide variety of weather
conditions and be in top shape; the course is tough but rewarding to
those who come well-prepared. All fields will follow the same courses
with the same distances; because of this, Elkhorn does not assess time
penalties or time cuts. The only requirement for a racer to start the
next stage is to finish the previous stage.

Registration is now open at:
http://www.athleteslounge.com/events/event.php?eventid=2283. The Men's
Pro 1/2, Men's Cat 3, and Men's 4/5 fields have traditionally filled to
the limit. We would love to see similar interest in the Men's Masters
and all women's categories this year too.
