Oldest mtb race

Did anyone mention "The Boss"? 100 mile mountain bike race, run out of Siletz, OR by John Henderson (who was "The Boss"). I did it 3 years in the 1986-1989 year range. I'm pretty sure 1986 was the first one. It was brutal but great fun with an awards dinner afterwards (if you could sit up).

Single track, logging roads, even a little on 101 along the coast to connect different off-road sections. Especially nice 6 mile climb off of 101 back to the top of the Coastals. Did these races on an original Specialized Stumpjumper. Ahh, I was younger then.

I have the finisher T-shirts from these races, so I know they really did happen.

John H, are you out there? How about another edition of "The Boss"?

There was a 1990 MTB race in my old neighborhood in Beaverton, near Hart
Road and 173rd. None of us Homeowners knew about it beforehand. Some of us
took a break from our chores to go over and watch and were amazed by the
fitness of the racers. Afterwards we took our bikes onto the course and
tried our best to climb the hills. I don't think any of us could.

I know there were a series of Trask Mountain races up at Flying M Ranch in
the mid to late 80s. 86-89? Also a cool series at Sokol Blosser winery in
Dundee. Back when Alex (their son) was racing bikes. A great idea and
sustainable goal for race venues near metro areas?! Hint, hint...

I know we have used private venues for 'cross races but maybe it is time to
start looking at them for MTB as well. Make for spectator friendly, easily
accessible event locations. Also generally better developed, too. Think Big
K minus the mud and crap.

So, go out and hit up all your farm-wine-land owner friends. Even if YOU
don't want to promote, likely someone in the area could work with them. It
is a great promotion for these folks--as long as the racers are civilized
and don't trash their property...

First mtb race that you guys went to

Mudslinger had Three races in 1988 and 1989 February March and April
---maybe I should do that again. Only if everyone else moves to summer
except Spring Thaw.
Before that the Triple Peak Ruled the Corvallis area in 1987 and 1988 in
Corvallis. I heard that they ran racing a few years before that with the
first guy timing the other 20 people

How about this---- I started racing in 1990

1988 NORTHWEST Regional Off-road point series

June 5th Skinners Classic Eugene
June 18th Oregon Triple Peak 15.00 entry fee
June 25th Dirty mudder days Wallace state park Washington
July 2-3rd Revenge of the Siskiyous Ashland
July 17th Trask MTN Chainbreaker
July 31st Belfair Mtn Bike festival
August 14th Bend Off-Road Classic
August 27-28 Cyrystal mtn Rockhopper NW fat Tire Festival Wahington( I want
to go to that)

Others,

Columbia Gorge Challenge (Mosier)
Ski Bowl mtn bike race 1989 with Ed martinez as promoter (before
petr---could it be possible)
Great Resort race (Bend)
Onion peak mtb race (Cannon Beach) Ken Noble won the Pro's for Raliegh
Fourth in the SS class was David Grey and he got paid-------10.00-----if you
SS guys see this it will start a whole posting for paying SS

How about the 75 miler the Slug Slammer----thats gonna hurt

Some 1989 Mudslinger results
Paul Thomasberg dominates the field thats all you can say about who would
win from 1988-1993 in this area

A few early season events to warm you up and then the summer dominated.

Don Leet

The first mountain bike race in Oregon was the Cascade Cruise, put on by Century Cycles circa 1983 or so. At least this is what I remember. The notable attendees to that race were Carl Decker, John Howcroft and I. If any of you other long time mountain bikers were there let us know. I remember doing mutliple Mud Slingers in the McDonald forest in the 80's and the triple peaks also. I was doing the Revenge also in the early 80's I think. Maybe 84 or so. I did the last Whiskytown downhill. That may have been 85 or so. That is were I met this very young hot mountain biker - Paul Thomasberg. Does the race in Yreka count as local, that has been going on since around then also. I could go on and on.
For the record Picketts has been going on since 1994.
