Thanks, Jess for your suggestion.
I did pass this information on to Jonathan, and here is his reply. Our highly esteemed local cycling journalist is on it. This makes me feel a bit better. Many thanks to bikeportland.org.

Hi Steve,

please feel free to send the info below to the OBRA list on my behalf...

thanks for contacting me about this.. I contacted ODOT immediately after reading cory's comment. I remain in touch with them and I'm awaiting more information . I also need to visit the location myself for a photo before running a story. Please stay tuned for more information.

Good point Jess. I hope they stay a good distance from us out on the

That's a big assumption, Ron. I would vote for Meth addicts looking for
scrap metal,
not bike hating "wackos"...

Hopefully a movement towards a permanent mural is still being
considered by the artist..

Jonthan Maus would be a good person to contact about it...most white
bikes I've seen
are still standing after several years.

This does not surprise me. Even though the coverage (I usually watch
ch. 8)
has been pretty even on the last couple of bike accidents, it just
makes the
"wackos" that hate bike riders no matter what... react in any manner in

which they feel control. I just hope the person (s) defiling the
memorial
leave it at that and keep good distances from all of us out on the
streets.
Be careful and courteous. Time will let their hate destroy them.

Earlier today my friend Corey, who goes by our friend Brett Jarolimek's Memorial every day on his bike commute, called me to let me know that the ghost bike is gone. It was there last night and gone this morning.

Needless to say, this is very upsetting.

From Corey's description, it sounded like the bike was not taken away in care. The bike was gone, but a few of the remembrances were left behind( scattered?) . Corey gathered what was left and rebuilt what he could of the memorial.

Corey just left a post about this on Brett's bikeportland.org Remembrances page:

http://bikeportland.org/2007/10/22/victim-was-bike-gallery-employee-avid-racer/

I don't know the protocol for ghost bikes- how long they stay up, and where all of the items that are left in memorial go to eventually. I had hoped this bike, and others, would stay up indefinitely.

It's hard to imagine that any ghost bike would ever be stolen. If so in this case, it's hard to fathom someone stooping so low.

Does anybody know anything more about this?

We miss you, Brett. Every day.

Steve
