Darell C. Provencher
Dear Senator Metsger,
I strongly urge you to pass HB 3623, the measure to create bike safety
memorial signs that will allow relatives of cyclists or pedestrians killed
on Oregon's roadways to request special memorial signs in certain
circumstances. This bill is also referred to as "Eric's Law" on behalf of
Eric Kautzky, a team mate of mine on Team Rose City. Eric was killed in
June of 2005 while riding his bike in Sherwood. I have been a recreational
cyclist, bike commuter, and competitive cyclist since 1978. In the past 30
years I have either witnessed or become aware of far too many injuries and
deaths of cyclists and pedestrians due to negligent drivers. In the past 12
months in the city of Portland, far too many cyclists have been victims of
careless drivers.
This bill is simple and yet could be another element in an ongoing,
continuous campaign we must wage to keep people using all modes of
transportation aware of their responsibility to travel safely.
To say the least I am sick and tired of politicians such as yourself who
can't follow the overwhelming recommendations and votes of the State of
Oregon House which passed the bill 57-0, and recommendations of the Senate
Transportation Committee. If this is how you listen to the will of people,
then I am happy not to vote for you as Secretary Of State in 2008, and I am
sure I can round up about 4000 of my closest cycling friends in Oregon to do
the same.
Please DO THE RIGHT THING and move forward with this legislation.
Thank you,
Darell Provencher
