Nothing dramatic, but a couple of times I've found 4 inch long 3/8 inch bolts that hold the starter motor in place on big block Chevy engines. ( They have some knurling on the upper shaft which makes them readily identifiable. If you've spent many hours under a truck.) They're installed vertically and will fall out if not seriously torqued down.

The point of all this is that there were some big gas-hog vehicles with loose starter motors that announce their situation by chewing up the engagement gear teeth due to mis-alignment. And a subsequent large repair bill.

And yes, I took them home with me. :)

In a district Road Race one year David Auker flatted and got a spare
bike from Sarah, who was in the caravan... after the race it took a
while to figure out what the flat was about, until someone noticed
that there were what looked like two valve stems sticking out of the
top of the rim.

Bill Cass carried the TAIL of a squirrel, I ran over the tail, and cut it off the squirrel (which ran away).
Bill wanted to tail for some art project or hat, so into his pocket it went for the rest of the ride.

I hope stubby the squirrel forgave me.

I "found" an industrial sized staple that pierced my tire, but not the tube. After a few miles of horrible little clicking sounds I pulled the staple out, stuck it in my pocket so it wouldn't bother anyone else and continued along my merry way.

Best find for me was money.  I was stone cold broke and hungry.  I was riding home from work in the dark and the rain on a borrowed bike.  Mine was being warrantied.  Saw some cash and stopped to pick it up..was a wad of 1's and 5's...I looked around and found some more heading towards some bushes...1's and 10's this time..as I got closer to the bushes I realized maybe this wasn't such a good idea....dark...rain...money leading up to a bush!!  So I grabbed the last bit of money i could reach before the bushes ran back to my bike  and booked like heck out of there.  When I got home I had $47 which was enough for groceries for the next week!  Top rommen, Kraft macaroni and cheese and cheap waffle mix galore!!!

I have also found lots of metal things that tend to end up in my tires.  The best was a pair of tweezers that went thru the tire, tube, and rim!!!

Back in 1979 during spring break 5 of us from the Stockton Bicycle Club were riding on Carmel Valley Rd in Calif when we came upon a very large, free-roaming, "make my day" fully equipped bull standing in the middle of the road. He charged at us a couple of times. We could not get past him for about 30 min, until some PYT cows came roaming by in the pasture behind him, and he decided it was better to make love not war.

i found my own money once. Got home, checked my pockets and was like crap where is my money? i know i just put ~$40 in there. so i jump back on my bike and backtrack. And there's the bills sitting right on top of a sewer grate. I had to be ultra careful picking it up, it was so close to falling in.

I found a really nice 17mm Snap-on open end wrench. super quality, still have it it is one of my favorite...
i know i and others have found lots of other stuff. My favorite trick is to reach down and grab things without stopping. I remember when we first started riding seriously, some crazy guy told us we needed to practice doing this sort of thing, cause if you drop your waterbottle in a race, you will want to turn around, go back and get it... Errr didn't take long how stupid that advice was, and no i never tried it, well least not in a race.

Although i used the technique to snatch someones rear blinking light (a nice expensive one too) off of broadway just before getting crushed. The guy was hauling and took a bit to catch him, he was like yeah i heard fall, didn't feel like stopping, figured it was already gone... (by the way, zip ties work great for securing blinking lights to seat bags. loop it all the way around the light.... )

I too had a nail drive all the way through the rim and another time i had a nail go into the tire, "bounce" off the tube and come back out the tire. No flat..

Recently stopped to help a someone who had picked up a nail, they didn't want to fix it, but were just going to walk to max... but the tire was still holding air, so i was like well push the nail in rest of the way (so it not hitting the stays), you might get home... when i looked back she was riding...

Best find for me was money. I was stone cold broke and hungry. I was riding home from work in the dark and the rain on a borrowed bike. Mine was being warrantied. Top rommen, Kraft macaroni and cheese and cheap waffle mix galore!!!

I have also found lots of metal things that tend to end up in my tires. The best was a pair of tweezers that went thru the tire, tube, and rim!!!

Oh man..I could go on for days about this subject.

I want to make a distinction between 'seeing' something
while you ride and 'finding' something that implies you
stopped and took posession of it.

Most of my findings were on Marine drive. I trained on
that road 3-4 days a week for the better part of 5 years.

Found cash on three ocasions.
Two of those occasions it was more than $25.00. (for real)

I saw one of those new VISA credit cards with the picture on it.
I turned around to pick it up but then noticed empty pistol
casings on the ground close to it so I just forgot I saw that and rode away.

A saw a mattress with a pair of jeans neatly folded up and a bible placed on top.

Pornographic magazines. (yea yea...SAW those) :)

I have seen various cell phones in pieces. I found one phone intact and it was still
turned on so I checked the contact list and found WIFE WORK listed. Smart
guy huh! Would have not done me any good if it just said MILDRED WORK.
I called his wife and told her I found his phone.

The road is an amazing place!

The best find.... I found an iPod full off music. Put a lost and found on craig's list and no-one claimed it.

I found a plaid blazer (like something a 50’s lounge singer would wear) while riding
outside of Palm Springs … I wore it for a while, but it wasn’t aero-dynamic enough
(plus, there was sand in the pockets)!

Something that may be of use which I came across while riding last Saturday in Hillsboro :
There is a baby stroller and the baby car seat (note: I chose to leave it there). If anyone
wants it, it can probably still be found in the ditch (more like “over the bank”) about 200 meters
west of the intersection of Susbauer Road and NW Long Road (on the right side of NW Long Road).

I'll take the not crashing over $5. anytime.
No one has given me money while I was riding but I have been given beer and some kind of home made cigarette while cycle touring through Phoenix .

On the subject of finding things while out riding: what's the best find you've had? I found a $5 bill (after crashing on wet pave, so it made up for it, kinda). Another time a wrought iron fire-poker...little nerve-wracking riding with it down the back of my jersey (coulda been a body-poker!).

And, not exactly "found:" someone once gave me $50 to give directions/lead them to a destination...

Always the question: "Is it worth stopping for?" To make the decision
to stop it's gotta be something good, as the ride itself, the continuous
motion thru time and space, questing the fitness is the most valuable
thing!
