not just make
a donation to The American Red Cross of clothing, cash, etc. Inform them
that this is
'for winter clothing/seasonal usage' and let THEM be the creative Martha

I'm from NY and while I think it's a wonderful idea, you may want to
consider
the tremendoues cultural diversity there.....Perhaps you can consider
making
something reflecting the holiday season, but less Christmas-centric.
Particularly in light of these racially-religiously-tense times. Of
course, I
feel compelled to make some sort of suggestion as to what, but I'm
apparently

In light of the tragedy that happened recently in New York I have felt
very
helpless like most Americans wondering how I can personally help. I
saw on
the local news on KGW that there were 131 orphans left out of the
tragedies.
This would be defined as 131 minors under the age of 18 that lost
either
both parents or one in the 3 plane crashes/World Trade Center. A
community
church in Portland put Project Linus into place where they homemade
150
blankets to comfort the children. These blankets were shipped out
with
special labels attached and will be given to the children to comfort
them.
It really seemed like such a small, but very meaningful thing to do.
We all know that now that Fall has begun and the Christmas Holidays
are
right around the corner. The holidays for these families will never
be the
same and their lives are changed forever. Christmas will be very sad
for
them and maybe we can help ease some of their pain. My idea is to
make
Christmas stockings for them and have them shipped via the Red Cross
Local
Chapter. I am asking each family donate the amount of stockings that
you
have in your immediate family and attach a special letter/card/poem to
each
stocking possibly helping them through their healing process. Most
people
have a sewing machine or know someone who does. Head to your local
fabric
store and be creative red, white and blue, flannel, fleece, fur etc.
Possibly leave the face blank for them to embroider or paint their
name on
etc or fur. If you need a pattern use your own stocking at home or I
am sure
there is a pattern in the fabric store. If you can cut it and just
need me
to sew it, I will do that. I anticipate the deadline for this project
will
have to be November 23rd. This is when I will need all of your
stockings to
deliver to the Red Cross. Anyone who wants to go with me for the
personal
delivery, I invite you to do so. I know this project can be simple
but
meaningful too. We can tell them it came from their friends in the
great
NORTHWEST. Get your families involved and let's get going.
Thanksgiving
will be here before you know it. Pass this along to anyone you may
know who
may want to get on board. E-mail me back and please avoid posting it
to
OBRA land, unless it is a brilliant idea to share among all of us.
P.S. I did think about stuffing these stockings as well but I am sure
that
the Red Cross can do this because of the possibility of chocolate
melting,
items getting crushed in shipping etc. etc. E-mail me with your
brilliant
ideas. Thank you.
