Sauvie
Island
Bridge Construction
Update

In the next few months the
contractor will complete road work on the island to connect roads and ramps to
the new bridge. Road work will include the section of Sauvie Island Road
from the Cracker Barrel store to the new bridge, as well as the two legs of
Gillihan Road that intersect with Sauvie Island Road near the bridge.

The work will be completed in
phases, starting with Sauvie Island
Road between the store and the new
bridge. Roughly 300 feet of road will be rebuilt over a period of about
two weeks. The schedule calls for work
to begin on or soon after Tuesday, April 1. Work is expected on
weekdays only. The road will remain open to traffic but one lane will be
closed on most work days, with flaggers directing traffic on one open
lane.

Asphalt on the existing road will
need to be removed. The roadway will be gravel during much of the work,
with gravel ramps at each end of the work zone and at the entrance to the
store. The work zone will be well signed to alert drivers to the gravel
road during non-work hours. After work on Sauvie
Island Road is completed, the contractor will
begin rebuilding the Gillihan Road connections
to Sauvie Island
Road near the bridge. Traffic will
continue to use the existing bridge until the new bridge opens this
summer.
