For immediate release (October 3, 2001):

The first race of the 2001 River City Cyclo-cross Series is this Sunday at

Alpenrose Dairy in Portland, Oregon. Historically, this first race of the

year foreshadows all the improvements and advancements made in cyclo-cross

in Oregon and the region. It will be exciting to see what new things are in

store for cyclo-cross on the west coast. Among the many series improvements,

the Cyclo-cross Crusade has teamed up with Red Lizard promotions to provide

a 5k XC Footrace, on the race course, prior to the full slate of cycling

events for the day.

The series: Formed 10 years ago and nurtured into a series which includes

both high-level and grass roots components. Experienced racers and beginning

riders are welcome and encouraged to take part in this eclectic, yet

enormously fun sport of cyclo-cross. Again this year, the series hosts a

large prize list, and should attract some of the strongest cyclo-cross

riders in the region. However, the series takes pride in drawing out large

numbers of novice and intermediate level racers, which have helped make the

series have the largest attended series of its kind west of the Mississippi.

The first series race this weekend features an additional $1,000 cash prizes

for the Men's and Women's Elite fields. This is in addition to the already

substantial series prize list of $10,000 (see www.crosscrusade.com

<http://www.crosscrusade.com/> for more info). The promoters are expecting

a huge local turnout as the Alpenrose Dairy course is a perennial series

favorite. This race should also draw a large number of racers from up and

down the I-5 corridor, from Seattle, Vancouver BC, southern Oregon and

northern California.
