My wife and I took a run on our tandem (a Santana Team Scandium). Unlike those two guys on the Calfee tandem, we are just regular folks.

We had suitable gearing, so none of the climbs, other that Brywood and College were a problem. We walked up about half of Brywood, and almost made it up College.

We don't climb as well as anybody else, so were off the back pretty fast. We figure that we completed about 90% of the ride - took a few shortcuts in view of the time we took. Got all the steep climbs though.

Finished at around 3:30 - in the rain!

I raced with Jim in the Beaver Fever Duathlon a few times. I'll never know
how he negotiated the transitions - he was too far ahead of me to catch him
in the act!

It looked pretty epic out there on two wheels.

Yeah, the first time I raced with Jim in 2000 at PIR I thought, "that's one I won't have to worry about". I couldn't have been more wrong!

Agreed, those guys on the tandem came to play! Yes indeed, thank you Dave Roth for taking the photos and sharing them with us. As we were about to start I saw a rider with one arm and half of a traditional handlebar. I didn't get a chance to talk to him. As the day wore on and I was struggling up the hills I began thinking of him and the mechanics of doing what I was doing with one arm. Shifting? Braking? Holding yourself on the bike while putting power to the pedals? A tip of the hat to him for even attempting this. Does anyone know who he was or whether he finished?

I rode much of the way near the rider with one arm. It was impressive on many levels. Obviously steep climbs would be a challenge, but even things like descending bumpy roads required great strength and skill. He finished a bit ahead of me, at around 4.5 hours.
