Fwd: Lost Powertap

Long, Steve

2008-04-15

Ron,
this is what a cut pencil is for.
Carry a short pencil wrapped with duct tape. I could save a walk some
day. Mine has done so for me and others.

Duct tape is somewhat cosmic. It supplies the healing needed by so many
human societies. Two prime examples on the North American continent is
the fact the sticky silver film can help Craig Austin set cycling speed
records and Red Green keep various car parts in place and Possum Lodge
standing. Promoters might think about tossing out rolls to the crowds
during raffle time. Let them have Duct tape! I am sure most people
have a Duct tape story of great personal importance. I have only one
negative thought regarding this universal band aide. It would be so
much more convenient for cyclists if you could get a small pocket sized
roll that was more convenient to throw into a bag (like my other
favorite... electrical tape). Oh! This is off topic. Lets ride...
like I did today and froze my fanny off.

I'm sticking with my duct tape recommendation. It can also be
used to keep your feet on the pedals at the track, and if properly
applied, can make you more aerodynamic.

Ron, you are ever the optimist. I would have an easier time
addressing my genetic limitations than I would getting free replacement
computers even if the loss is due to the deficiencies in the computer
mounts.

These toys are pretty expensive right?
I would think that taking the product back to place of
purchase because it is failing (mount or whatever) would be a way to get
the manufacturer to correct a problem that you owners (of these powertap
gizmos) are dealing with. They are just banking the profits while you
have to keep checking to see if the device is still on you bike. You
should not have to fix their poor design or lack of quality control.
That is part of what you PAY for when you buy a Powertap.
Sorry George... you cannot take your legs back to mom
and dad!

I realize some people may be tired of hearing
about it, but it appears that the reason why they come off may be
because the mount itself breaks and not that the computer comes out of
the mount. Another person had their Power Tap come off but managed to
catch it while he was racing. It appears that the new mounts break
where the bottom of the mount and the top of the mount engage. The new
mounts are designed that way to allow you to pivot the systemn to
install the computer mount either on the bars or the stem, but it
appears that the interface is a weak point that tends to fatigue and
break. If you look at your mounts, you might notice that the contact
point is not that large and you can easily wiggle it. Over time, it can
lead to fatigue and separation. I would suggest that once you decide
which way you want the computer mounted, you glue the two parts of the
mount together with some epoxy. It may prevent some of the wiggling and
vibration that can lead to fatigue in the mount.

If only I had an easy solution for the fatigue
in my legs.

With all the bad press they're getting on this list, I would hazard an opinion that the manufacturer would be amenable to fixing any design flaws. If there is an alternative choice to Powertap, there should be a corresponding willingness to replace defective units to save their customer base.

If you're having problems with the product, let the company know.

Ron, you are ever the optimist. I would have an easier time addressing my genetic limitations than I would getting free replacement computers even if the loss is due to the deficiencies in the computer mounts.

I would think that taking the product back to place of purchase because it is failing (mount or whatever) would be a way to get the manufacturer to correct a problem that you owners (of these powertap gizmos) are dealing with. They are just banking the profits while you have to keep checking to see if the device is still on you bike. You should not have to fix their poor design or lack of quality control. That is part of what you PAY for when you buy a Powertap.
Sorry George... you cannot take your legs back to mom and dad!

I realize some people may be tired of hearing about it, but it appears that the reason why they come off may be because the mount itself breaks and not that the computer comes out of the mount. Another person had their Power Tap come off but managed to catch it while he was racing. It appears that the new mounts break where the bottom of the mount and the top of the mount engage. The new mounts are designed that way to allow you to pivot the systemn to install the computer mount either on the bars or the stem, but it appears that the interface is a weak point that tends to fatigue and break. If you look at your mounts, you might notice that the contact point is not that large and you can easily wiggle it. Over time, it can lead to fatigue and separation. I would suggest that once you decide which way you want the computer mounted, you glue the two parts of the mount together with some epoxy. It may prevent some of the wiggling and vibration that can lead to fatigue in the mount.

If only I had an easy solution for the fatigue in my legs.

Maybe you Powertap guys should start using a little Duct Tape or something. The lost-my-powertap email is becoming almost as popular as the why-don't-promoters-make-their-categories-fit-my-riding-style-better messages.

I'm sticking with my duct tape recommendation. It can also be used to keep your feet on the pedals at the track, and if properly applied, can make you more aerodynamic.

Maybe you Powertap guys should start using a little Duct Tape or
something. The lost-my-powertap email is becoming almost as popular as
the why-don't-promoters-make-their-categories-fit-my-riding-style-better
messages.

It may prevent some of the wiggling and vibration that can lead to fatigue in t
he mou
nt.

If only I had an easy solution for the fatigue in my legs.

If Cobra Kai would kindly help me break my marriage, I'd have more time to ride and could possibly buy myself a Powertap wheel to go along with this small pile of Powertap computers I've picked up at races.

Dear OBRA community and especially Craig. Cobra Kai would like to wish everyone safe racing but is concerned with remarks made by Craig in regards to people losing equipment. Cobra Kai has also had problems with lost Powertap units but was luckily found in good time. Needless to say, Cobra Kai finds commentary by Craig and other members of OBRA communtiy to be callous and unconstructive. Powertap units are expensive pieces of equipment that when lost, have a traumatic effect on the owner. Not only is Cobra Kai's precious data gone, but also his equipment has been rendered essentially useless. Telling us to "use some duct tape or something, this email is getting older than..." when someone asks for help makes this community environment completely useless. Cobra Kai would like to see more constructive comments when someone needs help. If Craig asked for help with broken marriage, Cobra Kai would help.

Cobra Kai plays dirty, but desires fairness in these matters.

I was looking at pictures from cyclingnews.com of pro-riders bikes
from Paris-Roubaix. The one commonality of all the bikes were the use
of zip ties to hold the cyclo-computer on.
