The track pedal discussion has been most entertaining. Especially referring to "toe and clips." Before clipless pedals I recall them simply being toe clips. At anyrate, the underlying point seems to be to not use mtn bike pedals on the track. When teaching the track class a few years back I recall a number of generally fit people trying out the track and being successful with the toe clips and running shoe combo. So if just getting onto the track is your goal, don't sweat it if the rental bikes aren't NJS or you show up in jogging shoes.
Racing the track is completely different than taking the track class. the elite sprinters like the security of leather straps. In general, the average pro six-day rider uses the same pedals/shoes as on the road and that same rider is going to put far more force and torque into pedalling than the average local racer will at peak effort. So don't sweat using a road pedal for the track.
Finding one's peak power would require a wattage meter and given the rough surface of Alpenrose and the mounting bracket issue, I don't recommend a power tap for the track. Unless of course one uses straps to secure it. For the road, the downside to the SRM is then the unability to use power cranks. So that is an issue to consider before being able to maximize the spending on bike gear. Personally I like the idea of duct taping a wattage meter to a pair of carbon bars to fully be in tune with one's training.
