River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade

Round #2

The River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade makes its annual stop at Pier

Park in North Portland on Sunday, October 14th.

The Pier Park race is the second race of the series and is expected to draw

many top riders from Oregon and the northwest.

Over 380 competitors showed up to take part in last weeks events at

Alpenrose Dairy in Round 1 of the series. Johnny Sundt (K2 Bikes) captured

the win in the Elite Men's race with Barry Wicks (Team S&M) and Eric Tonkin

(Kona) finishing only a tire width apart in second and third place.

In the Elite Women's race, Anne Grande (Kona/ Voicestream) established an

early lead that continued to grow throughout the length of the race. Josie

Beggs (JFZ Racing) rode a tough race to finish second. Alice Pennington

(Gentle Lovers) displayed the strong form she showed all year on the road to

finish in third.

The Pier Park course is an approximately 3k long loop on undulating terrain.

The flat sections are reasonably smooth with ample room for passing and the

running sections are challenging but are few in number. Pier Park has been

a fixture on the northwest cyclo-cross scene since the early 1980's.

Racing starts at Pier Park at 10am with the Red Lizard XC Footrace. The

cyclo-cross events start at 11am with the Juniors/Masters 45 + and

beginners. The Cat. B and women's fields start at 12noon and the Elite Men

get under way at 1pm.

The River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade Series is quickly earning the

reputation as being the premier cyclo-cross scene on the west coast as it

has both the region's richest prize list (at over $10,000) and the largest

number of competitors.
