I think someone missed the point in Kirstins response-and skipped the volunteering part, and went to straight to the multi-thousand dollar bike part.
The folks that are putting on PIR races are trying to do a good thing for many people. If the fee is a true hardship-they are giving you the opportunity to turn an act of kindness into saving you a few bucks-which can add up in many ways.
Bring 3 cans of food (not sure the limit) save $3 (and feed the hungry). Mention that you commuted (by bike or max) save another $1 (plus you are doing your part with the environment, and the folks give another $1 to BTA). I am not a mathematician, but if you can save $4/race that equals by three get your fourth free....
Also, take advantage of volunteering at a race, clinc, series, etc to offset your costs and the organizers costs. Unfortunately not all of us out there working these races are being paid for our time-we volunteer to make racing affordable for others. Volunteer for a morning or afternoon race to get your entry fee comped-or better yet, bring along a friend that supports your riding and the sport (such as myself) and have them volunteer to get your fee comped. You are guaranteed of having at least one fan on the course, and someone to drive you home afterwards when you are tired.
Thanks to all of you guys out there racers, promotors, fans-your a great family to be a part of.
