Jerry,
In my opinion the biggest issue facing a master plan is increasing the ability
for people to commute safely from the West to East of vice versa. Specifically
there is no safe roads or bike paths for people who are going over the hill. One
of the designated path is on hwy 26 and Sylvan. how safe and desirable is that?
One solution would be to create a bike path on the Leif Ericson "road" through
forest park. I know for some people this may detract Forest park but I believe it
could make the area more accessible to people and create a safe bike path that
people could use to safely commute. There are many examples of cities that have
created these types of paths including Eugene and many European cities.
It is great that Portland continues to win awards as a bike friendly city but the
majority of access for bikes is on the East side. With increasing growth on the
west side and roads that are running at full capacity it is time the city makes a
full commitment to alleviating the car traffic by increasing bike ridership. This
will only be done if there is a master plan that focuses on making it safe and
enjoyable for people to ride their bikes.
I would love to attend these types of meetings but it is a bit far away. I urge
people to get involved and make Portland a great place to live and ride your
bike.
merci
Brad
