For the conspiracy-minded among us, this is just another ploy by the
component manufacturers to get us to buy more replacement parts more
often. For grungy applications like touring, commuting, and my
dedicated foul-weather trainer, I'm still clinging to 7/8 speed
drivetrains for just that reason. They look like motorcycle chains next
to the new bling, but they tolerate being ridden hard and put away wet
at least 3X as long.
I'm sure the 10-speed chains make pretty necklaces, though.

I have had problems when my drivetrain was not properly alinged (bent
hanger). But I get between 1000 to 1250 miles per chain. Not as much as
my 9-spd, sadly.
