Portland City Commissioner and Mayoral candidate Sam Adams to visit bicycle
races on May 5th 2008
Hundreds participate in weekly races at Portland International Raceway
during the summer on Monday evenings.
PORTLAND, Ore. Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams is visiting the Oregon
Bicycle Racing Association¹s (OBRA) bicycle races at Portland International
Raceway (PIR) on Monday, May 5, 2008 from 5:30-7 p.m. Portland bicycle
racers have been gathering at the PIR for more than 30 years, which has
provided racers a unique venue for racing.
Commissioner Sam Adams will tour the recently repaved racetrack course, meet
with OBRA management, and chat with racers.
³Portland is an amazing place to host bicycle events, and showing
Commissioner Sam Adams that bicycle racing in Oregon growing and is an
important part of the cycling community,² said Jim Anderson, race organizer
of Monday Night Bicycle Races, ³We have thousands of racers that benefit and
enjoy the venue.²
Racers have benefited from this unique venue for more many years. PIR has
provided a way for racers or potential racers an easy way to approach
bicycle racing without a huge commitment (time and money). Since OBRA¹s
inception in the late 1970s, OBRA¹s membership has grown to more than 3,000,
which is the highest per capita of racers in the United States.
The mission of OBRA is to promote and develop the sport of bicycle racing in
Oregon by providing the tools and resources necessary for competition. OBRA
values safety, participation, sportsmanship, teamwork, camaraderie and fun.

The racing course at PIR is a flat and wide 1.9-mile loop on high-quality
pavement for cycling. The raceway circuit is closed to all car traffic.
Racing starts at 6:15 p.m. on Monday nights from May 5th to August 25th. For
