Offroaders!
I just got home from R. Point Rd. trail area. I met up with John Joy and the two of us did the last of the work necessary to open up my newest trail we dubbed "Switchblade". Some of you may have a general idea where it is, but in general it is an extension further down into the drainage area (south side of *Rd 2) from way up top of Skeet Chute (some call it Headhunter). The new section is one mile long and can be ridden down or up, depending on ones condition and skill level. If you combine it with all of the Skeet Chute trail (not the elk flat loop south of clearcut) up above, it is well over a two mile climb or descent. This is what I have been working for in the area is a system with some sustained climbing. If you descend it to where it spits you out on the road and want to ride the road out, you have two options at present (more single track will be coming later).
1 If you go left on the road, it will take you back up the hill parallel to the trail. As you climb, stay to the left as spur roads off the right are just old landing roads for logging that dead end. You will top out (after a pretty steep climb) at the end of the road which has a trail that will take you back over toward *Rd 2. Also right where this climb on the road ends and trail begins is where the Downhill trail that comes out by the weigh station on Hwy 30 begins...off to right. Again if you climb up the road this way looping back pretty much next to "Switchblade" that you just descended... it is a major grunt of a climb.
2 If you go right on the road and stay right at the intersections (the two roads off to left dead end as well) as you follow this road, it will take you (after another good but not quite as steep climb back up to *Rd 2 right near the trail entry from Skeet Chute. This is the direction I would love to see people ride as it would be the one that will be best to keep the grass on the road ridden down as the warm weather makes it shoot to the sky. If we ride out this road, it will keep a singletrack trail open on it. Going out this way will also be a good climbing experience that can be take to hook right back into Skeet Chute. It is on this general climbing area where I plan to build more singletrack back up to Rd 2 so we can ride it instead of the road if wanted. That will come later. John and I are going to work on it being we are the retired folk with flex schedules. You can ride and enjoy! Really has a great workout potential now!
I would lead a ride of the area this weekend, but am off to race the Chainbreaker in Bend.
I would tell you all to let Jeremiah Swanson or Cary Miller to show you, but they got so far ahead of me (AND LOST I MIGHT ADD) that they missed where I was going to show them the new intersection onto trail... and rode down the top half of the Downhill run. So... what can I say. Check in with me and I will show anyone that wants to ride XC trails.
If you are riding out in these areas and come across trails that are "being built" but not open....Please do not ride them as alot of work can be destroyed if trails are ridden before finished.
Thanks,
ron
*Rd 2 is actually the first blue gated road on the left as you go UP Rocky Pt. Rd. Dorothy and I have always referred to the first blue gated road on the right as Rd 1. Go figure... since they are the first and second blue gated roads.
