Novice Masters to Cat 4/5?

Craig Austin

While I agree that it's nice to call it to someone's attention offline first as a courtesy, if you're in your third year as a novice, you either oughta know better or you're not paying attention. Racing in the masters 4/5 group is not an "upgrade" from masters novice, it's just where you start once you get your feet wet.

If someone raced beginners in cross for three years in a row (especially if they had some respectable placings) they'd be subjected to much worse that what Will did.

Damn, there's some uptight people on this board! This type of attitude is exactly what kept me from road racing for so long. I really wish cyclocross lasted all year.

Thomas: Sorry for piggybacking on your email, but to Will Cortez:
It's not cool calling out potential sandbaggers when you are asking for advice in the same email. Like Thomas said, bring it to Candi or Kenji's attention privately and let them deal with it.
As for the people you called out, did you think to bring it to their attention first? Maybe there is a good reason that they have not cat'd up yet. Have you been reading any of the emails that have been flying around here? Didn't we already cover this subject recently?
Wake up.

1) I'll probally regret this later but if people think someone is sand bagging they should bring it to Candi's or Kenji's don't post it to the OBRA list.

Will, you should be at least comfortable riding in the back of a pack, that is be able to stay close enough so you get some draft. If you can draft well and have the endurance to ride the extra miles, the 4/5's might even be an easier race.

I will add, motivation is fickle. Perhaps riding with the novice masters fits a time schedule. Perhaps an upgrade would be the catalyst to keep someone from racing at all. Some people dont have the time to train. At this level, does placing really matter? Not really. But maybe its enough motivation and fun to get someone out and riding. Beside at any point, anyone could go ride with the 4/5s. Some sort of "pack" is necessary anyway, and the more experienced can help.

So i would say unless a person is obviously stronger, like winning constantly, obviously training a lot, and the pack is large, then maybe complain about upgrading a person. Otherwise, just let people ride.

Aside from my total lack of patience, what should I "be comfortable with" before riding with the Cat 4/5 group on Monday nights? I've done 2 PIR races this year...

Also, it's nice to see the sandbagging alive in the Novice Masters group:

(1) #1252 - you've raced 12 PIR races in Novice Masters in '07 plus the Cherry Pie Road Race!!!!! You've raced PIR in the novice group at least 17 times in the last 2 years now!!!!

(2) #787 - you've raced 10 PIR races in Novice Masters in '07, 5 in '06 along with 3 races up at Mt. Tabor!!!!

Nice work...now Cat up!
