Skerritt, Kenlen Excel in Belgian Conditions in the
Third Round of the River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade Series
Portland, Ore., October 23, 2001 - In a nod to the hotbed of European
cyclo-cross, the River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade Series turned the
Portland International Raceway into a corner of Belgium for the third round
on October 21. With the weather doing its best to emulate Northern Europe,
Shannon Skerritt (Bike Gallery) and Karen Kenlen (Sunnyside Sports) endured
the muddy conditions to take their opening wins in the 2001 series.
The new 2.7-kilometer course was based on a traditional Belgian style
with long stretches on flat, grass fields, challenging off-camber sections
and two sharp run-ups over a dike that protects the low-lying track from
floodwaters. As if to enhance the ambiance, the 270-racers were greeted by
pouring rain and 45-degree temperatures in the third round of the $10,000
eight-race series.
The Category A Men got underway with a strong field that was minus
series leader Barry Wicks (Bike Gallery) who was preparing for the upcoming
Collegiate National Mountain Bike Championships in New York. In what is
becoming a tradition, Nutra-Fig's Don Reeb charged away to win the first lap
prime of a bottle of wine and $20 cash.
The eight-lap event took shape on the second lap as Bike Gallery
teammates Derl Miller and Shannon Skerritt gained 10 seconds on an eight-man
pack. Jon Myers (Team S&M) was fighting back after a poor start to come
from the back of the lead group. On lap three, Myers put in a big effort to
bridge up to the leading duo.
The three leaders cooperated to maintain their distance from the
hard-charging pack. Unlike the more technical courses, PIR was kind to
powerful road riders like Reeb who was seen at the front of the chase group.
As the finish approached the excitement was building, assisted by six
enthusiastic fans that built a human pyramid to cheer on the action. After
hearing the bell, Miller attacked but was not able to separate himself from
Myers, opening the door for former series winner Skerritt to take his
chance. Skerritt made it stick and put in the fastest lap of the day at
more than 16 miles per hour to earn the victory, followed by Miller and
Myers. Travis Hunt (Mt. View Cycles) and Reeb rounded out the top five.
In contrast to the men, the Women's race spread out early with
Sunnyside's Kenlen moving to the front on the first of six laps. The women
benefited from a schedule adjustment that let them take to the course
without having to contend with a larger men's field.
As the laps counted down, Kenlen continued to extend her lead over
Leah Toffolon (Bike Gallery), with Rhonda Mazza (Team S & M) further back.
Last week's third-place finisher Naomi Gollogly (Bike Gallery) was looking
competitive before a flat tire moved her well back in the pack where she
ended up in seventh position. Across the finish line, Kenlen finished 20
seconds up on Toffolon, followed by Mazza, Rhonda Fuchs (Sobe Headshock) and
Emily Miazga (Hutch's).
From the flat, grassy PIR course, round four of the River City
Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade moves to hilly, technical Johnson Farm above
Henry Hagg Lake in rural Yamhill County. Set on an orchard-covered
hillside, the long climb in the early part of the lap is the defining
characteristic of the course. With autumn rains forecast for most of the
week, Johnson Farm will favor skilled bike-handlers and climbers.
