FYI, if you're interested in the new Share the Road license plates....
I recently received my vehicle registration renewal notice and I
noticed that the new "Share the Road" license plate was not listed as
an option on my renewal slip.
I checked it out online and it's also not one of the plates you can
order online either.
So..after going through the process and getting my own plates and
talking with the DMV here's what you do:
If you get your renewal notice in the mail and want to choose the
Share the Road plate. Just add $20 to you regular renewal sticker
fee and write in "Share the Road" prominently. (10 is for the non-
profit plate and the other $10 is the fee to switch plates.) The
extra $20 is a one-time fee only. You'll pay the regular sticker
renewal henceforth.
I my case, my regular sticker renewal fee was $54. So add the $20
and the total is $74.
The plates will be sent from Salem in the mail with your new
registration. It took two weeks for mine to arrive. If you think you
can save time by waiting in line at the DMV, they'll still have to
send the plates by mail from Salem, so if you can do it by mail, you
can avoid the time-sucking vortex at your DMV office.
If you want to switch plates and you are between renewal periods,
there's an extra $5 to do that. So add $25 to your regular sticker
renewal instead of $20. You can download the correct application at:
http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/vehicle/platechange.shtml
If you have any questions about how to proceed or to verify how much
to pay for your own plates, you can call Oregon DMV Customer
Assistance (503) 945-5400.
I encourage everyone to in the cycling community to consider getting
the plates. Not only do the proceeds benefit the Bicycle
Transportation Alliance and Cycle Oregon, but it spread the "share
the road" message and also reminds other drivers that cyclists are
regular, normal folks just like them who sometimes drive cars...and
we're not necessarily part of the radical fringe.
(Although some us aren't particularly normal and ARE part of the
radical fringe...they don't need to know that.)
