River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade Series
Round 4: Johnson Farm, Hagg Lake
The River City Bicycles Cyclo-cross Crusade Series visits Johnson Farm at
Hagg Lake on Sunday, October 28, 2001 for the legendary Halloween 'cross
race.
As the race series moves west, Shannon Skerrit (Bike Gallery) has moved
himself into the leader's jersey for the Elite Men's series. Teammate Barry
Wicks (Bike Gallery) sits in second place but probably only due to his
absence from the series race last week. Wicks is tied for second with yet
another Bike Gallery rider, the soul-patched Derl Miller.
In the Elite Women's competition, Karen Kenlen (Sunnyside Sports) has
claimed a share of the leader's jersey with Rhonda Mazza (Team S&M) after
her win at PIR last week. Prior to her absence at the last race, Alice
Pennington (Gentle Lovers) held the series lead. After PIR, both Mazza and
Leah Toffolon (Bike Gallery) have leap-frogged over Pennington to put
themselves in the top three overall to date.
In the hotly contested Masters 35+ field, Mark King (Sunnyside Sports) sits
on top with a fairly substantial lead; however, John McCafferty (Bike N'
Hike) and Greg Talbert (Clif Bar) are in a tight race for second in the
series so far. The Masters 45+ series is a fantastic race between Steve
Yenne (Capitol Velo) and Dave Zimbelman (Sunnyside Sports) for first and
second respectively. The ever-present and very steady Dave Burnard (Mrazek)
holds down third in that series.
The Juniors series is shaping up into a nice battle with Mikkel Bossen (Team
Oregon) in first, Joseph Dengl (Fat Tire Farm) in second and Alex Johnson
(Capitol Velo) in the third position in the series.
The Men's Category B series top three at this point is Damian Schmidt
(Sunnyside Sports), David Roth (unattached) and Dave Campbell (Hutch's).
The Cat. B Women's series is hotly contested with Kori Kunz (Paradise Homes)
holding a narrow lead over Meg Heaton (Team S&M), with Kristin Rotaix
(unattached) in third. The Masters Women series top three to date are;
Courtney Marvin (Hutch's) in 1st, Renee Pype (Team S&M) in 2nd and Shirlee
Clark (Capitol Velo) in third. In the Beginners category sits Kirk Slack on
top with two successive wins. Evan MacKenzie and Sean Coster round out the
top three in that category.
Racing starts at 10am with the Red Lizard XC Footrace on Sunday, October 28,
2001. The Beginners and Masters 45+ race at 11am, followed by the Women's
and Juniors field at 11:50am. The Category B race will start at 12:40 pm
and the day will be capped off by the Elite Men and Masters 35+ at 1:30pm.
Remember, it is a $5 dollar entry to those who show up in costume (dressing
like Lance in a US Postal jersey does not count). Let's see if we can set
an attendance record for a 4th consecutive week at Johnson Farm. I would
also like to set a record for number of costumes racing. As always, various
primes will be awarded in all categories throughout the day. There may even
be some prizes for good costumes.
