For someone who wasn't planning to race at all this summer, who hadn't trained and whose life is crazy with career transitions right and left, I raced anyway and surprised myself. So some thank yous are in order:

Thank you to my Team Slow teammates for talking me into racing anyway, even though I hadn't trained and was getting used to shifting gears; and thank you for rocking it at the relay on closing night.

Thank you to the ladies of Masters' Women 45+ for giving me such a warm welcome into the category. After three years of racing on a singlespeed bike, I am embracing gear-shifting and finding it a revelation. (Now maybe someday I'll learn how to get faster...)

Thank you to the friends (Mielle, Ron, and so many others) who came by the start area with hugs and high-fives and reminders to keep it fun.

Thank you to OBRA officials for keeping track of the mayhem out at PIR every Monday night. (How you do this is beyond me.)

And a big Thank you to the folks at Portland Racing for throwing what must be the best race series in the universe. The PIR Short-Track series has only one flaw: it lasts just eight weeks. When it ends, it feels a little like the beginning of the end of the magic of summer.

(And if anyone got photos of the closng night's festivities, please let us know.)

Basking in the awesomeness, resting my tired legs and staring at my geared bike in amazement.

Happy riding!

I want to say thank you to Dean at Bike Central for repairing my bike and
replacing my chain while I rested up for my next race.  I also want
to thank Darell Provencher for providing a replacement wheel for me to
borrow.

My chain broke during my flying 200 and completely locked up my rear
wheel.  I somehow managed to keep upright as the bike went sideways
and then fish tailed back & forth nearly the length of the back
straight.  Fortunately I didn't fall, but it completely destroyed my
rear wheel.  Thanks for the cheers from everyone, and thank you Bike
Central and Darell for helping me with my bike.

Sincerely,

First, before I start sounding off like the strident jerk that I really am,

I want to thank EVERYBODY that showed up at our race this weekend. The

event could not go on without the people that helped to organize it and the

volunteers that do the work at the event. The crowds were truly awesome.

Now for the a bit nastier bike racing insider stuff.

Provencher, Darell wrote:

"And let's not forget our dedicated race officials and announcers (Splinter

and Dave), and yes, the USCF for their well-organized officiating and

professional demeanor throughout the weekend."

I feel compelled to note, for those with a less well developed sense of

irony, that although the Alpenrose Challenge was, for the first time, run as

a USCF event this year there was NO input from the USCF in terms of

officiating, organizing, professional demeanor ... or anything else for that

matter. All organizational input for this event came from other sources;

OBRA, ATRA, and the usual cast of local (and tireless) officials. I agreed

to hold the event under USCF sanctioning only because of 2 items:

1) The permit fee was waived;

2) USCF stated that the would use the results of the AVC series events to

select for national teams and international competitions.

#1 decreased the cost of USCF participation considerably and #2 increased

the value of the event to potential competitors making it more likely that

we would be able to attract elite level competitors.

Since making this original agreement USCF has not followed through on the

promise to use the series for selection.

Whether the Alpenrose Challenge, any of the American Velodrome Challenge

series races or, for that matter, any track races at all will be sanctioned

by USCF in 2002 is a question yet to be answered.

Glad you had a good time

Provencher, Darell

2001-07-30

And let's not forget our dedicated race officials and announcers (Splinter

and Dave), and yes, the USCF for their well-organized officiating and

professional demeanor throughout the weekend. I overheard several of the

big boys making very positive comments about the event, and they plan to

come back next year.

BTW, what percentage of racers in each category were local? Seems like it

was less than last year. We need a bigger showing of the local talent next

year.

Thanks for a truly great event. The women and men's sprinters were

spectacular.
