The following is a note that I just received from the person that runs the
Dick Lane Velodrome. Sounds like he could use help from all cyclists. With
only 19 velodromes in the country it sure seems like a waste to turn one
into a pond.

To everyone involved with track cycling
It is with strong regret that I have to tell you all this. As of now the
Dick Lane Velodrome will most likely not exist next season. There will not
be a season at our track or most likely any other. I have been in contact
all morning with the city's manager Michael Miller and Gene Cornet of the
Parks and Recreation Department. Both have given me the same report. Our
velodrome will be turned into a storm water retention pond. The city council
has passed the measure for the storm water master plan. They are in the
funding stage at the moment. They do have to generate 12 million dollars,
but this is something that they are pretty set on doing. In speaking with
Mr. Miller this master plan has been passed by every organization that is
needed and has been mandated by the State. Even if the city does not get the
funds this season they will not renew our contract with them at this time.
We have been sabotaged by the city who has purposely been snow balling me
into thinking we had time to raise funds. Their intentions all along have
been to tear it down. The best part of the whole situation according to them
is that we still have another velodrome. "It was built for the Olympics." I
throw this in to show you how stupid they are and how much they really do
not care enough to do any research about it. I have been telling them for
years that the Olympic velodrome is gone.
I am a pretty reactionary person and I am pretty upset at the moment. I
however do believe that this will happen. I do want to fight and will of
course. I hope that you will as well. I am listing everyone that you need to
contact. If anything bug the hell out of them so that they realize they made
a mistake, but don't make them mad. (In writing this, I just got an email
from my great and lovely fianc?e who has taken up the fight as well. Being a
Regional Land Use Planner she would most likely know of any loopholes or
things we can do. Like I said I will fight, but I really do not want to do
it alone. If you would like to get involved please try and think of the
positives that we bring to the community and let them know about it. It may
be to late, but at least we can try.)
I wish I had better news. Especially with all of the plans that we had for
the season. The creation of the East Point Velodrome Association and all of
the races that we had planned. It would have been a great year. I already
had two full beginner classes lined up with new students.
