Tom Boonen Lastest Caught

Indeed, that's what troubles me most about this. Despite the guys
personal problems broken down into it's simplest sequence the story reads:

Person is drug tested because they race bicycles.
Drug test detects what is best termed recreational use of a prohibited
substance.
There is clearly no violation of competition rules for which the test
was conducted.
Regardless the police are notified and a search is conducted of the
persons property.
Additionally the persons parents home is searched.
No further evidence of illegal activity is found.
The media is notified before charges, if any, are filed.

But I guess that's ok since we all know drug tests are infallible and
the highest duty of the state is to protect the individual from harming
themselves.

No, not if you understand the reason for drug testing athletes. It is to prevent people from taking performance enhancing drugs, not to act as a police force.

It's not illegal in that country? Isn't that enough? Maybe we should ask old Marco Pantani about it.

Brings up an important point that Mike Murray has made and a very well-written article in VeloNews made...

The BIGGER issue is not cheating but rather SUBSTANCE ABUSE. This is a pattern of self-destructive behavior that hurts people. Athletes that use EPO, etc are more likely to do Coke, Speed, etc. all at great cost to themselves and the greater society. Opening Pandora's box so to speak. Ethics are ethics and a stronger personal stance in one area generally applies in others.

Caught may not be the most appropriate word. The police found nothing
in their searches and the drug is only illegal in cycling if detected
during competition, which in this case it was not. It only adds up to
an accusation that he used a drug in his off time. Of course that's so
rare these days...

Embarrassing for sure though, especially when he's looking for a new
job.
