The Race
Right from the start the Pace was intense as a group of 15 took off after
the Mass start....I lead out the group for close to 2 miles and then they
hit the climb for 5-6 miles of opening position taking and then the
singletrack begins and in between fireroads...more singletrack...a few, like
4 big climbs and then on the backside of the course.......tons of
singletrack...the get back on your saddle and nail it root bombing, type of
stuff.....intense for some and for others a place to get away and get to the
next climb. Adam Craig (Giant) and Barry Wicks (Kona) jumped away together
and built a 1:30 lead on Erik Tonkin.....by the end of lap one with Sean
Babcock (S & M) and Ben Thompson ( Cannondale) Evan Plews (Capitol Subaru
Cycling) and Bret Nichols (Rivercity) taking there best shot to real them
in. Adam Craig Riding his 35X16 Fully Rigid SS, let his legs do the talking
as he powered up the climbs with Barry sailing in tow...trading places,
taking breaks together.
Adam took the lead for good over the last 5 miles to win in a record
*Adam Craig Giant Pro Male 3:43:35*
Barry Wicks Team S & M Sean Spencer Wicks Explosion.Jere/KONA Pro
Male 3:44:33
Evan Plews Capitol Subaru Cycling Pro Male 3:55:30
Erik Tonkin S & M Speedwagon Pro Male 3:57:20

The Team Competition pitted long time rivals, S and M verses Capitol Subaru
and the rest of the field with Team S & M Sean Spencer Wicks Explosion.Jere
taking first place and the 500.00 team award over Capitol Subaru Cycling by
1:04......with team S & M Speedwagon taking the masters 35+ Team Award
Beating Cyclepath by 19 minutes for 4 team members with Team Dirt " Out for
Dirt" taking 3rd.
Back to the Open team competition.......the course record is 16:02 and if
the course record is broken, Mudslinger Events pays 1000.00 to the team that
does it.....they posted a 16:02:11....tied the record and I keep the
grand......a good day for me, and I do think the record will fall.....one
less pee break here one less missed shift or crash. Consolation was a free
entry for 2010 for the S and M Open team...and beer.
Karn Dewolf from Team Dirt Took Home the Overall Womens Pro win with a
5:06:01...only 3 minutes off of Sue Butlers time and 4 minutes off of Angela
Sucich course record in 2005 of 5:02
Karen won an entry into the cream puff 100.....
Many riders finished and many have stories of fun and pain...I am just glad
to bring the pain and keep Oregon racing strong.....you all the be
commended....especially the Cat 3 riders. when you get into hr 6,7,8 you
experience a whole level of riding that many do not experience...this is who
the race is for...open new doors
