you are in luck dave, cause i use to work at whirlpool with those washers. they are built for ease of assembly and thus ease of disassembly too. We can have it practically totally apart, with about 5 or 6 fasteners in about 5 minutes.
that said, the gearbox is kind of unit unto itself. Although its been 20 years, i do remember the guts but barely. It's not too hard to take it apart but might be better off finding a scrap gearbox and putting it in. all the 600 or so different models (yep marketing..) used the same guts, and exactly the same gearbox, . that is approx half of all wash machines in the US and canada are these machines, probably over 40 million of these are out there.
the logic for spin or agitate is in the gear box based on the motor input direction, (the motor has a forward and sometimes 2 or 3 speeds, and reverse)
It would not be a timer issue. i am quite sure. although the mechanical timer is probably the number one failure on these machines.
there is some part in the gearbox that has failed, which part ? ..... have to take it apart and look. I can't remember all those parts.

Hey racers,
Has anyone done any DYI repairs to a Kenmore (made by Whirlpool) top loading direct drive washing machine?
I want to fix it myself but am not sure what the problem is. When it spins it also agitates in the opposite direction. I think it could be the gearbox or timer. Any ideas out there?
Please email off list. Thanks!
