The new EWEB Wind Power Team (Previously Paradise Homes) is putting on

the Cherry Pie Race, scheduled for February 16 or 17, 2002, and we looking

for

people's preference on categories and entry fees. This is the first race of

the 2002

season and we want to have high participation and a high level of

enjoyment for the riders, so we are asking for help in a couple of

options.

The more fields we have the more work for those judges, getting the

order of placement, and the more crowded the roads are and the more lead

car and officials and support or wheel cars we need and the cost goes pretty

high, not to mention getting a lot more volunteers to drive and help. It also

makes for a longer day for the corner marshals to stand in the rain. It may

be more fun and interesting to ride closer to parity in fitness too.

Last year we had a choice for the 3's to ride with the 1 and 2 category

or ride with the 4 and 5. Some 3's complained that riding with new

riders was dangerous, and riding with the 1 and 2's was no chance of

placing. We don't have that many 1 and 2's to make a race, and a great

deal of 3's, and a cat 5 finished in the top 3. We did not have enough

women to separate out 1,2,3 and 4 so they rode together.

This is what we are thinking for groups this year:

Juniors age-graded 13-15 and 16-18 leave at same time one lap, 21 miles.

Men Cat 1,2,3 (3 laps) 62 miles

Men Cat 4,5 (2 laps) 42 miles

Women Cat 1,2,3 (2 laps) 42 miles

Women Cat 4 (2 laps) 42 miles

Masters 35+ (2 laps) 42 miles

I can do this formula and charge $20.00, or I can break it down to

4 groups for about $15.00 that would look like the following:

Mens 1,2,3 field

Mens 4,5 field

Women's 1,2,3,4 field

Junior field.

I also had the following recommendation from a racer-pormoter and suggested

by several people after the race last year.:

1/2/3

3/4/5

Masters 35+ 3/4/5

Women

To encourage women's competition do the women as a handicap, i.e. give the

Cat 4 women a head start.

If you want a Junior field then also do that one as a handicap.

The Masters 3/4/5 will address the only 2 REAL reasons to have old guy racing

1) to decompress the over populated Cat 3 Field and 2) take advantage of the

demographic bulge in this age group.

Not sure how to price this for official and support cars etc.

I would appreciate thoughts on the subject and will tally the results and

we make plans accordingly.
