I have been using Powercranks for over 3 years now. I have them mounted on my commuter bike.
I used them almost everyday except during bike races my first year and saw my performance drop significantly. This was most probably due to the ease by which these things can overtrain you. I now use them just twice a week for aerobic maintenance and recovery as well as smoothing out my spin.
Since I primarily race on the ice (shorttrack speedskating) I find these things essential to being competitive since bicycling really does not aerobically train your hamstrings in the same way that skating does and these muscles are essential for endurance on the ice. If I did not skate I would not hesitate to jettison them.
As with any training tool, one must use them with a clear understanding of the results they may deliver to you.
