Is Gales Creek Trail Open?

Yeah...it was a sad day. I have no clue how they would be able to fix it. Basically you'd have to reroute the trail way up the hillside away from the creek, but who knows how the rest of the mtn is looking, or you can try and bridge back and forth over the creek a few times to whatever side still had a hill side to build on. There were FEMA flags marking the trail all the way up. It was the only way we made it. You'd hike over the debris for 15-20min, then see orange flag fluttering in the wind off in the distance. We knew that that is were the trail started again and we'd aim for that marker. Became a little game, like "where Waldo".

Thanks for the report. It's really disappointing, I love that trail. Had
there not been massive clearcuts uphill from the roundtop logging operation,
you gotta wonder if the erosion and landslides might have happened *at all*.

I actually pushed through all the way up to Bell Camp Road. It was one of the dumbest/dangerous things I've ever done. But hey, there were three of us who at first thought it was sorta an adventure. Gales Creek Trail just doesn't exist anymore. There were massive landslides (300+ft) so the side of the mountain where the trail was is now gone! We hiked over trees, rocks, logs along the creek thinking that if we made it up a little bit higher then eventually our beloved trail would be fine. Nope. Everytime we would make it, there was another massive landslide, usually much worse than the last one we just made around which is hard to believe considering how bad they were. At one point I was holding on to a root on the side of a washout, handing bikes up to my buddy, who was dangling on a tree sticking out the side of the hill, handing it up to our other friend who was perched on the edge of the huge drop off. Like I said, we were retarded. It took 2.5-3hrs of mostly hiking to make it to Bell Camp Rd. Yes, the logging has messed up the trail, but honestly it was only the last 500m or less. So, you can ride Gales Creek trail from the parking lot, it's perfect, but when you come to the Storey Burn/ Gales Creek T' in the trail...GO LEFT! That would be Storey Burn and it's in great shape. So is the other side of the highway (Brown's Camp, etc.)

Its my understanding that the part of Gales creek trail that starts at the
campground is open. The part that goes North towards Reehers Camp is closed.

ALthough I liked watching Ax Men (it reminded me of why I got out of the logging/woodproducts industry), I dont think the TV show or the participants destroyed the road. I believe the road was so badly damaged that it has not been repaired yet. If you watched the show when the storm hit, it was quite a blow to the area. :(

I tried to ride the trail a month or two ago. I pushed through the first
washout, then climbed down a ten foot cliff at the 2nd washout, and gave up
when I hit the 3rd. I'll be surprised if the trail is open this year at
all.

It's due to massive sections of trail that were washed out during the storm
that flooded Vernonia. Much of the trail is just plain gone.

I second that. I hear it's been closed -- I hope it's not due the history
channel's logging show.
