Came across this earlier today, only concerns older dates but there might be some people out there riding them...

I had that happen years ago on an older pair of Onzas... just the last
few mm of the threaded tip of the axle, taking the retaining nut with
it. Frustrating since the entire body/bearing assembly remained intact
and would slide back on and spin beautifully (and of course it was only
half of a pair), but no way to ride without the retaining nut to hold it
on the spindle and the cost/availability of a replacement spindle
basically meant getting a whole new set of pedals.

Mine was the cheapest MXR model. the axle broke at the very outer end at
the nut. The entire pedal fell off during the second lap of the race at
the Kruger's Kermesse last fall. All that was left on the crank was the
axle. It was my first ride on them. I bought them from an online
clearance store. I sent them back to the seller who promised to
replace, but never did and I didn't follow up. I was out $40 or
something. It wasn't enough for me to sweat over, so I left it
unresolved.

Brian,

Which model was yours? I've got several years on a couple different
pairs of Eggbeater SLs, with no problems other than some lateral
axle/bearing slop that developed on one (I've had the same deal with
other brands of pedals too, always on the left side, so I figure it's
gotta be a consistent side-loading quirk in my stroke alignment). I
haven't heard of any issues with any of the CBs, but of course would be
curious to hear if others have had experiences like yours...

recall. Brian

Oh yes,
It is always the left side that fails, unless you are in the southern hemisphere. In australia it is always the right. Of course it would be the opposite if they put drivetrains on the left side of the bike.
I have been using eggbeaters exclusively since they first came out and have one similar "failure". I looked at it more as wearing out in my case. Lots of miles and no maintenance.

Tyler Durden: A new car built by my
company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks
up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we
initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by
the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court
settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a
recall, we don't do one.
Business woman on plane: Are there a
lot of these kinds of accidents?
Tyler Durden: You wouldn't believe.
Business woman on plane: Which car
company do you work for?
Tyler Durden: A major one.

It was the Stainless steel spindle, which is still OK. The end bearing is
what failed. The inner race, nut and washer pulled right thru the outer
race of the bearing. The balls are scattered on FL7. Clarification, the
bearings balls.

Interestingly, I have 2 responder's saying they have experienced the same or
similar problem. I read the Look recall statement and they list 12 reported
incidents. So, we have 3 so far on this list in 15 minutes. Hmmm..
