Here is my letter to Crank Brother's and their reply. I am surprised that
the bearings need to be replaced every 6 months.
In all fairness I think I had 2 full seasons on the pedal that broke.

That is a great start to maintain our pedals, But just so you know like the
bearings of your bottom bracket, they need to be replace. Your bearings took
6+ years of riding. Our rebuild kit are only $16.00 and we recommend to be
done every 6 months to a year.
Thanks

They were not rebuilt. However, they were maintained with grease on a
regular basis. Thanks. Brian

It looks like you have pre 2002 pedals. Can I ask before anything when was
the last time a rebuild(bearing and bushing change) was done on the pedals.
Thanks

Subject: Pedal breakage
Hello,
I love youre pedals and Ive been using them for years. However, with the
recent recall notice for the Look Keo pedal I am compelled to write you this
letter. I had one of my Egg Beater pedals break-off from the spindle a few
years ago. I didnt think much of it at the time. Then last week we started a
discussion in my On-line Chat group and Ive discovered the breakage is more
common than I had assumed. 11 people responded and said they had the same
experience.
I hope you are aware of this problem. I have included a picture below to
illustrate what happened. Please notice that the inner race and retaining
screw are still in place.
Is this irregular or is it something we need to be checking for on our
current pedals? How do we check for it? Please consider that Im greasing the
pedals on a regular basis and the pedals do not show any excessive wear. I
would like to relay this information on to my group if that is OK.
Thank you,
Brian Engelen
