I had ACL replacement surgery a couple years ago. Since then all during the

riding season I battle patella tendonitis. What is the best way to deal

with the patella tendon during the off season. It feels OK right now, but

still flares up when I do a couple hours on the trainer.

Thanks

Pat

I am a Physical Therapist, presently running the outpatient orthopedic

satellite clinic for Providence out in Parkrose. The retropatellar pain you

are describing sounds like a basic chondromalacia patella syndrome.

Assessing your patellar tracking mechanism would be appropriate. It may be

just a case of utilizing patellar taping treatments to treat it but this is

hard to diagnose without a proper and thorough evaluation. Get your primary

care physician to refer you to a Physical Therapist close by. I will be

more than happy to work with you if it's convenient for you. Good luck,

Leo

Hey OBRA,

So, for the second time this year I have developed a severe

knee pain that is keeping me off my bike. The first forced me to drop

out of Tour of Willamette. Now I'm being forced into doing nothing

during an already boring winter time. It's a living hell! I hate the

gym as much as the next guy but now I find myself longing for those

mind-numbing rides on the rollers followed up by being ridiculed by the 10yr

old girl when she realizes that she can lift more weight than me. The first

time this happened I was told that it was an irritation caused from over

use. That made sense then, but not now. I haven't changed my position,

cleats, shoes, or any of the usual culprits of knee pain. Oh, and to top it

off, I discovered that my knee now makes a horrible noise and I can feel a

lump of crackly "badness" under my knee-cap. So, any advice? I would like

to find a doctor/physical therapist who might specialize in this sort of

thing. Bonus points if they are in the Kaiser system.

thanks and please reply to: tifo-@excite.com

Ps..The Cross series rocked! (even if I sucked) NW riders obviously know

whats up judging by the number of racers and spectators each event. Thank

for an amazing 2001 racing season. Happy Holidays to all!
