Yo, Ron

While you have the right attitude yourself, it's not easy to maintain
that enthusiasm.

What I keep trying to generate some interest in is Age Category racing,
like is fairly wide-spread and quite popular in other parts of the country.
Or perhaps just a few more categories for older masters, if the race
organizers don't want to bother with Age Categories..
The numbers are there if you look at the timed event attendance. Each
season more racers get old, also.
Because we have very little age category racing, most older Masters here
in the Northwest get discouraged at chasing guys that are way younger and
'retire' to timed events only.(or they travel to race) Without a realistic
chance..no matter how slim..to feel like you might possibly contend in at
least one or two sprints per season...the 'fun' just isn't there to justify
the time it takes to keep 'racing fit'...But if you knew you'd have a few
races each season (at least) where you were racing against others your own
age and performance potential, it'd be great.

In other states there are lots of races with starts for older racers. In
the Northwest, we have plenty of old racers, but few races for us. Just
toss us out there with a minute break between classes..

My fellow old people, get out and race. We'd have had a lot of fun at the state Crit if we had a few more 60+ there. Now don't leave me alone against the young 'uns at the Master's track championships.

I should point out that next weekend's Masters Track Championship will have
categories in 5 year age increments from 30 up. The flyer says up to 55+
but if there are sufficient numbers there will be separate races for even
higher age groups. This is not only for the timed events but also for
sprints and points races. In addition, you don't even need to own a track
bike as we will rent you one. Also, this event includes a catered barbeque.
Masters should show their support for this by coming out to race.

You've all heard it before from me: That there is enough interest amongst
older Masters racers to warrant perhaps including some specific classes for
us along with your 'traditional' category classes and the somewhat limited
current Masters offerings.

I was interested in seeing the 60+ Masters start list for the OBRA
Hillclimb event tommorrow is one of the largest in the whole field. I got
curious and compiled some informal stats from the few OBRA events this
season where age categories were offered.
At the OBRA HC chamionship tommorrow, there are 29 entrants in the 50+ to
60+ classes.
At the OBRA TT championship there were 45 entrants in the 50+ to 65+
classes.
Even Larch Mt. (OUCH) had ~20 older Masters >50+

So please, you organizers..think of us when you plan your races for the
next season and give us a chance to do some wheel to wheel racing amongst
ourselves rather than just "tacking us on" as a "scored seperatly". And you
older racers..keep asking..it seems there are a lot of us..maybe they will
listen to our requests..

I agree only if older racers like myself show up and race... Promoters are
not going to include categories if we do not show. I am showing for the 50+
at the Kermesse tomorrow. If you are old, reading this, want what Don is
suggesting more than that next bowl of ice cream.... then get off the couch,
quit griping about the courses (they are the same for all riders) and get
out to the races. The youngsters await your arrival.
