NEW YEAR'S DAY RIDE:

    Tuesday, Jan. 1, 12 noon.

     This annual ride has been going on for over 40 years, and it's a great

tradition! It starts at the Battleship Oregon Memorial on SW Front Ave. and

then makes its way over to Laurelhurst Park in SE Portland, where there will

be a three-man, 300-meter sprint race among veteran local racers David

Auker, Jay Graves, and Robert Burney. Each of these three will be racing

for his favorite charity, so you can "bet" on the winner--in any amount you

want--and regardless of who wins the sprint, the charities will be the big

winner.

    David Auker, of Team Rose City (sponsored by River City Bicycles), will

be racing for the Sisters of the Road Cafe, a Portland restaurant that

serves meals to homeless people.

    Jay Graves, owner of The Bike Gallery, will be sprinting for the Bicycle

Transportation Alliance, the advocacy group that

represents the rights and interests of bicyclists in Oregon.

    Robert Burney, of the Emerald Velo Club (also sponsored by River City

Bicycles), will be racing for Transition Project, a nonprofit organization

that finds shelter and temporary housing for homeless people.

    The bike ride is free, but we urge you to write a tax-deductible check

to one of these three charities in advance, depending on which rider you

want to win. You can date your check on or before December 31, 2001, to

help with your 2001 taxes. Then bring the check with you to the ride on New

Year's Day. What a great way to "Ride in the New year!"

    (P.S. Robert Burney reports that last year he totally blew David Auker's

doors off in the sprint. David reports he was just taking it easy on Robert

and will get him this year. Jay Graves has said both Robert and David will

only see him from behind as he rides away from both of them.
