Legends Coming to Nike Cycling Development Camp, February 15-17, 2002
(OBRA (www.obra.org) - December 21, 2001) Most of the experts agree that a few guys in sleepy Marin County, California founded a whole new sport in the late 1970's, most of them members of Velo Club Tamalpais. They were strong and energetic guys with a vision for a new kind of bicycle. They all had simple, straightforward names like Joe, Tom, Charlie, and Gary. Two of them went on to found "Mountain Bikes," which later became Gary Fisher Bicycles. Today Gary Fisher is an icon of the sport he helped to create, and active supporter and builder of the cycling community at large. Gary will be one of the Legends of Cycling coming to the Nike Cycling Development Camp at Nike's World Headquarters in February 15-17, 2002.
Another living legend comes from a very different world and background. Concrete jungles. Power and intimidation. Daily survival. Speed and cunning of a cheetah. Harlem, New York. Olympic silver medalist Nelson Vails was a former NYC bike messenger who became a lightning-fast sprinter that turned the track cycling world on its ear. Nelson will also be on hand February 15-17 to speak, coach, and inspire camp participants.
Both of these legends and other cycling greats are coming together at the Lance Armstrong Sports Center and the new Tiger Woods Center to develop cyclists of all ages and categories. They are also coming together to support two nonprofit organizations closely connected with the cycling community - the Lance Armstrong Foundation (www.laf.org) and Bicycles and Ideas for Kids Empowerment (www.kidsofbike.org).
Three benefit events are scheduled during the camp and are available to non-camp participants. These include the Legends of Cycling Benefit Reception and Evening Presentation at the Stanford Amphitheater in the new Tiger Woods Conference Center, on Friday, February 15. The Reception is limited to 200 people and will include hors d'oeuvres, and the opportunity to meet and talk with our world-class guests. World-class athletes in attendance will include UCI MTB World Champion Roland Green (http://www.canadian-cycling.com/e/natteams/bios/green.htm), three-time World Cup, World Champion , and Olympic Silver Medalist Alison Sydor (http://www.trekbikes.com/teams/vw/bios/sydor.html), and fellow Trek/VW team mates Travis Brown (http://www.trekbikes.com/teams/vw/bios/brown.html), Sue Haywood, Ryder Hesjedal, Walker Ferguson, and Chrissy Redden. Following the reception will be the 8pm evening presentation in the Stanford Amphitheater presented by the kids of b.i.k.e., which will include speakers, racing footage, video clips, a fashion show, and a few other surprises. The Legends of Cycling Evening presentation is limited to 770 people.
The third benefit event will be the Saturday Cycling Legends Benefit Ride, Hagg Lake. Saddle up Saturday afternoon and ride with our Cycling Legends around Hagg Lake. This is a moderately hilly ride on an 11-mile loop around the lake. It's a great chance to ride up to four laps with our world-class cyclists and benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Bicycles and Ideas for Kids Empowerment.
The development camp itself will include race clinics on Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoon mini-workshops in the Lance Armstrong Sports Center. Mini-workshops will include instruction from world-class athletes and coaches in spinning, weight lifting, plyometrics, nutrition, etc. Camp participants will participate in the Friday evening benefit activities as well. Other Oregon-grown national and world-class talents coming to help at the camp will include top pro trials competitor Jeremy Van Schoonhoven, and five-time juniors and U-23 champion Larsynn Staley. Others planning to instruct at the camp are two-time world and five-time national champion Juli Furtado, Thomas Prehn, Bob Mionske, and Phil Claud.
Camp Registration Options are as follows: Option 1 Full Camp, Feb 15-17, 2002 (Cycling Legends Evening, Athlete Reception, Race Clinics, Mini-workshops). Limited to first 100 participants.
