Question about transporting newborns via bike

I have a 15 month old and when he was 4 months old I tried the car seat in
the trailer thing and it didn't work too well for us. First of all I
haven't seen a car seat that completely cradles the infants head properly
and their head will bounce around a lot because the child usually falls
asleep in the first 5-10 minutes of riding and trailers are known to bounce
around especially with light loads in them. Although this may work for
others, I'm just sharing my experience. In addition I would definately talk
to your pediatrician to get their input.

Ken,

i strapped my daughter's car child seat into a trailer when she was
three months old and it worked great.

I have a column on BikePortland about family biking. Here's a recent
story that went through a lot of the different kid-biking set-ups. http://tinyurl.com/6kes55
. There are lots of photos and links and many comments from readers
with more tips/advice.

good luck.

I am sure people will have many opinions here, but I would encourage you to
also listen to your child... We have 3 kids, the youngest is 1.5yrs old now,
and all of them started on the trailer at different ages. Some around 6
months, others at 10 months or so. We started with rides around the
neighborhood, and then increasing slowly after that. While I was in the
first 2 years of kicking off Nossa Familia I was a stay at home dad and did
some training rides with the two kids in tow during their nap times, but
never more then 1.5 or 2 hrs, and again listen to you baby/kids, if they are
having a miserable time then something is wrong and they are not ready for
it yet.

There is a lot of info out there, but remember to listen to your kids!

Wow, neat site. I wonder if I can find one that's as alarmist about
transporting newborns by car...

Sure, it's alarmist. Doesn't *necessarily* make it wrong. Ken asked
for opinions. This organization has an opinion. I don't share a lot of
it, and you don't have to either.

Alarmist car articles? Here's a good one about how car seats restrict
babies' breathing ability, resulting in lower blood oxygen levels.

Ken,

You might want to take a look at this article:
http://www.bhsi.org/little1s.htm I'm not necessarily advocating for
their position, but it's definitely food for thought. Your little one
will be precious cargo, so it will help to read lots of different
perspectives on the subject.

Congratulations!

Congratulations Ken!

I would forget about a trailer for at least a year. The poor kids
just get shaken around way to violently and need at least that long to
develop the proper neck strength. I'm sure your pediatrician can
point you in the right direction, so please be sure to include him or
her in your decision making process.

Again, congrats!

I wouldn't think about transporting a kid until he/she

#1 can hold head upright
#2 has a snug fitting helmet
#3 has enough body strength to not flop around

I may be wrong, but my trailer manufacturer recommends 18 months or so
minimum.

My first kid is on the way, and I was wondering what the different
bike transport options are for the first six months or so (after that
-> bike seat, followed by tag-a-long, etc.). Is a trailer the only
option? If so, do you strap the car seat in there? Any advice would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
