Mackenzie river trail question

Out and back on the trail for sure. Make sure to bring some cash for a piece
of pie at the turn around point. My buddy stated categorically that pie is
God's riding food. Not sure that is theologically sound, but it bears up to
some fundamental trail scrutiny.

I have ridden McKenzie trail many, many times over the years...at least
once, you should do the round trip, up the back down...about 60
miles...wonderful trail full of most types of trail experience. Climbs are
not too long or difficult. Technical challenges are available, plus the
return leg (from Clear Lake back to the Ranger station or McKenzie Bridge
parking) can be a high speed dash (as it is basically downhill the whole
way).

Things to be wary of:

The freaking trail is becoming a highway, too many people are using it and
removing trail obstacles, soon it will be wheel chair accessible!

Watch out for the hikers, their running loose dogs and kids! Especially on
Weekends. They, by in large are friendly, try not to scare them too bad when
approaching from behind....

The lava section can be painful if you fall.

Don't ride the trail alone unless you know it and yourself very well. Take
plenty of water & food.

It is pretty hard to get lost on this trail, the trail is pretty well
defined and does not have many off-shoots that take you nowhere. The river
is pretty close all the time, and you can always bail to the road if you
need to

This trail is a good example of what our part of Oregon has...though a very
good trail, not the best around, but sure is fun!

If you ride the trail from the trailhead up by fish lake to the bottom it
takes 3-4 hrs if you are going fast. So I would not ride dirt up. You would
be looking at a 8+ hr mega epic. Even riding the road up it is gonna take 6+
hrs. Ride the rd up or shorten the ride.
If you rode the dirt up just turn around when you feel halfway done, you
will not get to the top.
If you wanna ride only dirt and go higher start from deer creek instead.

Just as a side note, the McKenzie River Trail will be full of trail runners this Saturday for the annual running of the McKenzie River Trail 50K. You may want to think about riding the trail late in the day Saturday or Sunday. The run ends directly across the street from the ranger station and you can expect runners finishing until around 3pm or so.

Andrew,

Some friends and I did it, it's a great round trip, trail the whole way. Start early and carry two lunches and snacks. Trail varies from fast and forested to volcanic. The round trip on the trail is worth it, avoid the road. I think it was about 6 hours with breaks. The dip in the lake at the top was refreshing.

Are the total miles around 60?

Thanks,

The McKenzie River Trail is about 27 miles and the HWY is about the same
It would be a long day and ride
IF you are going to do that I would ride up the HWY and down the trail.
Cogwild out of Bend offers shuttles on that trail.

Thanks
