Hello,

You'll get a lot of votes for the Crank Brothers Eggbeater-type
pedals. I've noticed so far that most just praise their mud-clearing
capabilities. While this is certainly true (and I've ridden Shimano
and Shimano-clone SPD type pedals) I think another very important
attribute is their ease of entry and release.

All Crank Bros. pedals use the same cleat. You can switch the cleats
for a 15-deg or 20-deg release (sooner or later). The float is very
light and fluid-- on my initial ride I felt like the cleat/pedal
interface was greased! But it's the design of the cleat and pedal
that make them very secure. With SPD-type pedals, cleat retention is
a function of spring tension (it's adjustable on SPD pedals). Too
little tension and you'll pull out of the pedal more easily. Too much
tension and you might not come out at all! With the Eggbeater-type
pedals (Eggbeaters, Candys, Acids) the spring tension is fixed (and
very light feeling), but you will very rarely unintentionally pull
out of the pedal. Personally I have never once come out of the pedal
by accident in 3-4 years of riding Eggbeaters exclusively-- off-road,
on-road, cyclocross.

I first purchased the Candys for my MTB and liked them so much that I
switched all my bikes from SPD to Eggbeaters and Candys.

One final note regarding Candys-- I have found the plastic/composite
platform to be somewhat slippery against my Sidi Dominators. I don't
know if this is true for other shoes, but I don't find the additional
plastic platform secure in wet, muddy conditions. For cyclocross I
use the Eggbeater.

Cheers!

I asked this question a few years ago and the resounding concensus was
that Crank Bros Egg Beaters are the best for CX. I soon after bought a pair
and am very pleased. They tend to shed mud and debris very well and they
have 4 sides to clip into, making for less fuss when remounting.

CB pedals do not take the SPD cleats (as far as I know). They will come with
the cleats needed if purchased new.

For off road/ATB/Cyclocross, I recommend the Crank Brothers Candy, Smarties,
or Acids at a minimum.not the egg-beaters.you need more platform for muddy
slippery conditions.and no other pedal is better at shedding mud or working
in the mud, even after running in the mud..

I'm in the market for a new set of pedals for cross racing, so I thought I'd
see what others are using & have had success with for Cross. I see a lot of
Crank Brothers pedals out there but have heard mixed reviews.

If you are using a pedal that you really like and is durable, let me know.

Cheers

I like the Crank Brothers Candy pedals. I used them last year without incident. I like them better than the Eggbeaters because they have a little bit of a platform in case you dont click in right away. They also are easy to clean and maintain.
