Best technical MTB rides in the PDX area?

Mark J. Ginsberg

Ben,

there is PUMP< portland united mountain peddlers. they are an advocacy and riding group.

as for who to tell, it depends on who owns the land, city of portland, portland parks (these two sometimes don't even get along), county, metro, private?

So who do we need to be telling this stuff to?  Remember, I'm new in town.

Parts of them are rooty technical and good mud at
times, but there is little rocky areas.... you need to travel farther from town
for that stuff until we get the city/county/metro and or whoever to open up some
other good spaces that are close in..... and the more we ride and tell these
agencies that we want "TRAIL" that we do not need to DRIVE to the trail head...
the sooner we will get them.

In no particular order, here are some maps:

Rocky Point
Road:

Brown's
Camp:

Burn:

Black
Rock - BRMBA (Falls City) is a lot of fun, but a bit of a drive.

Post
Canyon (Hood River) is supposed to be a lot of fun - a bit of a drive, but
mostly highway.

I
think Stub Stewart State Park is supposed to be getting some trails
too:

For close to Portland, check out the trails off
Rocky Point Rd, take Hwy 30 about 25 min west, Left on Rocky Point
Rd (just before you get to Scappoose) about 2-3 miles up, there is a
gate on the right (by a sharp turn in the road).  Ride down the main
road behind the gate, I like these trails because its impossible to get
lost, there is one main road down the middle and all of the single track
"loops" start & finish back on the same road, I was there about a
month ago rode for 3 hrs and never hit the same trail twice...good
stuff.  You can drive out there, ride and drive home in 3-4 hrs.
One thing to remember, this is logging company land, so if you see signs
that say "keep out of this area", please obey them to maintain this place
for everyone.

"There is none?"

You must have never ridden Oregon Larch in
the Gorge, some of the most technical riding I have ever done.  You
have to find the right sections of trail though, it is a bit of a loop maze.  If you can clean it all, I'd
be happy to buy you beers (DH'ers in full faces do not count!).  It is far more technical ST than any of the
others mentioned.  I think good info can be found on www.mtbr.com
Gorge 400 has some great technical aspects as well, especially the switchbacks at the beginning!  Both trails are about 30+ minutes from PDX.

I like the Browns Camp/Gales Creek loop areas in Tillamook State Park
because certain combinations of those loops offer 15-20 miles of solid,
some hilly, some technical trail (it is not for the weak or the
beginner). I have heard good things about Wilson River but it is a
point-to-point trail.

I volunteer trail building in the Reeher's park area at least a few
times a year. Although it's getting better, I don't think it's as good
as good as Browns Camp/Gales Creek area.

I don't think it's worth the gas to drive to Forest Park/Logie Trail
area for a couple of miles of trail unless you live near there (but my
opinion).

You can get trail maps of the area at any bike store, though I find some
bike stores (like Bike Gallery for example) keep them in better stock
supply than others. I forget the map company, but the map with a
PUMP/IMBA logo on it has the Tillamook trails including the direction on
the trail you should be going, which I highly recommend following for
safety reasons.

The bad about the Portland area is that there isn't a lot of good trails
near Portland (this shocked me when I was first moved here). BUT, you
can help get more trails built in the area by volunteering at places
like Tillamook State Park. In fact, mtn bikers owe a lot to both bikers
and horse lovers for the trails Tillamook has.

Browns Camp/Gales Creek/Reehers areas have some good riding once you
find your way around. Longview too. Falls City isn't much more than an
hour and has plenty of good riding. Pioneer Bridle from Timberline all
the way to Rhododendron is plenty technical for most folks, but it may
be too late to ride it this year. McKenzie River Trail is only 2 hours
away.

Even Hardy Creek on the Molalla River has a few fun sections mixed with
the boring stuff.

It's not as bad as everyone thinks, just because Forest Park sucks.

Good stuff! Thanks for all the replies. I'm from NY originally but
spent a lot of time in western Montana and NorCal. Not into the
freeride/big air scene but used to ride trials as a kid so I have a
taste for the trails that tend to ask you to solve problems in a hurry.
=)

Can you send map links for any of those? I'll go digging as well....

Many thanks!

One location that is perfect for a new dad is the Longview Timber owned
land outside of Scapoose. This is off Rockypoint Road I believe.
It is 30 minutes from town and has fun technical riding, but nothing to
explode over like sequential 2 foot drops, log rides, or 1000' long rock
gardens. Better than a kick in the nuts and is ridable all year (let the
soil drain 24 hours after a hard rain).

To break your neck go to Post Canyon. From small dirt jumps to HUGE air,
it has it all.

To try and get your rocky terrain fix in try Syncline (1:15 minutes from
PDX). It is the sort of place you can break your self on plenty good.

I need to scratch this itch. Please advise!

Browns Camp/Gales Creek/Reehers areas have some good riding once you find your way around. Longview too. Falls City isn't much more than an hour and has plenty of good riding. Pioneer Bridle from Timberline all the way to Rhododendron is plenty technical for most folks, but it may be too late to ride it this year. McKenzie River Trail is only 2 hours away.

Even Hardy Creek on the Molalla River has a few fun sections mixed with the boring stuff.

It's not as bad as everyone thinks, just because Forest Park sucks.

Good stuff!  Thanks for all the replies.  I'm from NY originally but spent a lot of time in western Montana and NorCal.  Not into the freeride/big air scene but used to ride trials as a kid so I have a taste for the trails that tend to ask you to solve problems in a hurry.  =)

Can you send map links for any of those?  I'll go digging as well....

Many thanks!

Rough and rugged are not really good descriptions for Oregon and South West Washington trails. If you are from BC or the East Coast you will need to recalibrate your expectations.

One location that is perfect for a new dad is the Longview Timber owned land outside of Scapoose. This is off Rockypoint Road I believe.

It is 30 minutes from town and has fun technical riding, but nothing to explode over like sequential 2 foot drops, log rides, or 1000' long rock gardens. Better than a kick in the nuts and is ridable all year (let the soil drain 24 hours after a hard rain).

To break your neck go to Post Canyon. From small dirt jumps to HUGE air, it has it all.

To try and get your rocky terrain fix in try Syncline (1:15 minutes from PDX). It is the sort of place you can break your self on plenty good.

Hey!  Still new-ish to OR & PDX and I've been off the MTB for a while but now I'm jonesing something fierce.  I'm in PDX with an infant, so I can't really pull off to many all day epics.

What are your favorite rough and rugged technical rides within an hour of the city?

I need to scratch this itch.  Please advise!

Thanks.

Not true there are some decent single track  trails west of town, just off of Logie trail.  Approx 1-2 miles up on the right side of road there is a turn out with gate.  Not a ton of mileage but definitely a good time.
